Associate Director, International Commercial Communications - BioPharmaceuticals

Purpose of the Role:

To provide expert communications counsel to International Commercial leaders and teams, driving and amplifying internal and external communications and campaigning activities in line with Global and regional business needs and priorities.

Role description:

The Associate Directors (ADs) for International Commercial Communications are dynamic and exciting roles, supporting high profile business priorities and contributing significantly to enhancing and protecting the reputation of AstraZeneca’s pipeline and brands in its main therapy areas.

As a key member of the International Communications Team, reporting to the International Communications Director, the successful candidates will work closely with teams at above and in-market levels to build and manage effective communications in support of commercial initiatives aligned to our International and Emerging Markets strategy. The International region (Latam, MEA and Asia, including Russia, Japan, Australia and China) is AstraZeneca’s fastest growing area and a highly innovative contributor to the Company’s global ambitions and achievements.


The AD (BioPharmaceuticals) will support Directors of International Commercial for 1) Cardiovascular, Renal & Metabolism, and 2) Respiratory and Immunology in driving commercial success through impactful communications on priority projects across internal and external audience. The full range of internal Company communication channels will be relevant to the roles, with a focus on digital and social execution.

The ADs will also be responsible for:

  • Driving market engagement with International Region initiatives, campaigns and priorities, partnering with Global Therapy Areas and Corporate Affairs teams on significant enterprise (including SET-level) events.

  • Expertly supporting the execution of internal and external communications around major initiative awareness, partnering, clinical, regulatory and other business milestones.

  • Supporting communicators and non-communications professionals as part of cross-functional networks and project teams at regional and market levels.

  • Playing a significant role on International-level communications events, including ONE International / senior leader meetings, best practice sharing and other region-wide activities.

  • Represent the International Commercial Communications priorities and perspectives to the wider International and Global Corporate Affairs networks.

Within national Government COVID-19 restrictions and AstraZeneca regional and local policies, there may be a need for occasional international travel to fulfil business responsibilities. See also COVID-19 flexible working policy/guidance for information.

Essential Requirements:

  • Effective communicator and storyteller, in both written and verbal communications; with fluency in English.

  • BA, BSc or equivalent internationally-recognised degree in Communications, Marketing, Science or a related field.

  • Strong project leadership skills and collaborative capabilities required to drive successful delivery against comms strategy in partnership with a mix of internal and external stakeholders

  • Strong communications experience in a corporate and/or agency environment, with ability to provide effective coaching and guidance to peers and other team members.

  • Capability to assimilate large amounts of information into simple, effective communications messages; managing multiple projects concurrently and prioritising accordingly.

  • Demonstrable experience of delivering impactful, strategic and content-rich communications programmes and proactive stakeholder management with measures of success.

  • Ability to interact with multiple points of contact and advise and influence effectively, including senior leaders and teams across functions and geographical boundaries.

  • Ability to think strategically and work with agility.

  • Creativity and confidence to challenge leaders / project leaders to follow best communications practices for optimal results, including innovating and new ideas where appropriate.

  • Multicultural work experience and cultural understanding.

The following are highly desirable:

  • Experience in pharmaceutical/healthcare communications or PR.

  • Experience of living and working in an international (ex-Europe, ex-US) or Emerging Market.
