CFA 2021 51 Associate Communications Officer (Crisis and Advocacy) (UG) Geneva, Switzerland

Context:
The Media and Communications Division (MCD) of IOM is comprised of experienced

communications professionals based in Geneva and Manila.

The team provides advice and support on media and public information issues to IOM

Headquarters and missions worldwide. It is responsible for global media relations as well as

producing a variety of other on- and off-line public information materials, manages IOM’s web

presence, institutional branding and social media, and oversees initiatives including the Global

Migration Media Academy and the It Takes A Community campaign.

Under the direct supervision of the Spokesperson, Crisis Communications and Advocacy Officer

and in close coordination with the media team, the Associate Communications Officer (Crisis

and Advocacy) will assist in the production of the division’s public-facing content related to

advocacy and risk communications including social media content, monitor media and social

media reports related to migration and IOM, draft briefing notes and assist in the draft and

implementation of the advocacy and crisis management strategy. The associate will also

conduct a full revision of MCD’s external contact database.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:
1. Support the Division’s efforts by assisting in the preparation of public information materials for

IOM’s bi-weekly press briefing notes, newsletters, website and social media in clear and concise

English and specific to Crisis Communications and Advocacy.

2. Support the advocacy and Media work related to operations in Libya and the Central

Mediterranean.

3. Completing a review of MCD’s global contact list leading to the creation of sub-lists designed

to reach media, academics, donors, government partners etc. to allow for a more streamlined

and targeted approach to external information sharing.

4. Collect and systematically organize and analyze Media coverage related to Libya, the

Mediterranean and active Crises and migration related news.

5. Conduct Media Monitoring with focus on the human rights of migrants, violations on

international migration and refugee law and reputational issues related to IOM and the UN

system.

6. Assist in drafting Press releases related to advocacy and crisis communications globally.

7. Manage and consolidate the online SharePoint space on crisis communications and

advocacy and ensure LTTs are up to date.

8. Develop social media, features and other public-facing content on Libya and the central

Mediterranean, as well as global advocacy efforts.

9. Support the development of IOM’s strategy on crisis management and advocacy.

10. Liaise with country offices and regional offices on breaking news and establish a clear

information flow standard operating procedure.

11. Prepare administrative reports and programme updates as necessary.

12. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience:
Education

  • Master’s degree in Journalism, Communications or a related field from an accredited academic

institution with two years of relevant professional experience; or

  • University degree in the above fields with four years of relevant professional experience.

Experience

  • Experience in writing and editing;
  • Experience with database management generally and the MailChimp campaign platform in

particular;

  • Working experience in an international organization is an asset.

Skills

  • Knowledge of graphic design, social media and video production.

Languages

IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish.

External applicants for all positions in the Professional category are required to be proficient in

English and have at least a working knowledge of one additional UN Language (French,

Spanish, Arabic, Russian or Chinese).

For all applicants, fluency in English and working knowledge in French or Spanish is required

(oral and written). Working knowledge of Arabic is an advantage.

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process,

which may include written and/or oral assessments.
