Over a third of the world’s population has no regular access to the Internet. Millions of children leave school without any digital skills, making it much more difficult for them to thrive. This has created a digital divide between those who are connected and those who are not, a divide that has become even wider during the Covid-19 pandemic. UNICEF and ITU have therefore joined forces to create Giga, an initiative to connect every school in the world to the Internet and address this new form of inequality.

Working with 19 countries (and growing), Giga maps school connectivity in real-time, advises on appropriate technical solutions, creates models for innovative financing, and supports governments contracting for school connectivity. To date, Giga has mapped over 1.1 million schools, connected over 5,000 schools, and mobilized over $200 million for connectivity.

How can you make a difference?

Giga is looking for an experienced, self-motivated Technical Content Creator who can work with a diverse interdisciplinary team to lead in the production, documentation, and impactful dissemination of knowledge products across a range of platforms and forums to amplify Giga’s ambitious goal of connecting every school, and every community to the Internet. The individual would ideally work across various geographic locations, using a wide range of devices and digital platforms. The successful candidate should possess skills and expertise in planning, writing and documentation across a range of mediums and a diverse group of players. The candidate should have strong and exceptional communications and writing skills that will enable them to construct and articulate Giga’s goals and mission to the relevant audience for a specific impact.

Scope Of Work/ Work Assignments

Under the supervision and guidance of the Programme Manager and Communications Lead, the Technical Content Creator will write, oversee, and coordinate the writing of products for Giga’s internal and external consumption. The Technical Content Creator will oversee and follow up on all technical work to ensure quality products. They will review and revise all current Giga materials by editing the existing text and structure, drafting new content where necessary, consolidating, and synthesizing draft text and technical input from multiple sources, updating references on current evidence, and generally responding to the recommendations for updating the documents on the Sharepoint Drive, depending on the product needs and target audience.

Responsibilities Will Include

• Create, edit and revise various forms of communication products, including but not limited to correspondence and technical documentation such as policy briefs; factsheets; briefing notes; talking points; Concept Notes, Proposals, website content and other presentations.
• Conduct desk research of materials, including the materials produced by Giga and other relevant organizations, in consultation with team leads and staff members
• Provide technical guidance to the team on standards for written content, guides, and updating the Giga FAQs master document.
• Quality control: edit and proof-read written documents prepared by Giga staff, including checking spellings, acronyms, technical terminology, and other abbreviations, etc.
• Ensure all written work is authentic, original, and appropriately cited and/or referenced.
• Draft key Giga proposals, design concise, easy-to-read concepts/resource mobilization documents for non-technical and technical consumption
• Develop short, concise public facing country profiles for each of the Giga countries based existing information and data
• Create a public facing digital archive/repository for content produced
  

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

• An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in Communications, Marketing, Social Sciences, management, or related degree is required.
• A first University Degree in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree.
• A minimum of five (5) years of relevant working experience
• Strong written communication skills and experience as a technical writer with a particular focus on ICT, and innovation work.
• Proven experience writing documents for a wide range of audiences, including at a high-level
• Experience with data visualization, infographics etc. would be an asset
• Capacity to develop concise, accurate, and effective output documents as required.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment; proven track record working across a cross-functional team
• Fluency in English. Competence in another UN language is preferred.
  

Payment details and further considerations

• Monthly payment, based on monthly tasks and progress reports, approved upon monthly review with supervisor.
• Consultant is responsible for his/her own health and travel insurance
• Consultant is eligible for standard DSA for all work-related travel

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
