Purpose of role

The Barclays Credit Risk team is responsible for the credit risk management of the lending portfolio. Lending activity together with the provision of financial trading facilities to clients is a key platform behind the strategic growth objectives of Barclays. The activities of the team cover Sanctioning, Policy, Procedures, Management Information, Credit Models, Collateral Evaluation and a number of Strategic Change Projects.

Upon completion of the Geneva Credit Risk hiring plan, the Geneva Credit Risk team will consist of the Head of Credit for the Geneva business and two Assistant Vice Presidents. The team has responsibility for supporting the growth of the Wealth Management lending book in a controlled, safe and profitable manner in accordance with the framework of the Barclays Wealth Credit Risk Policy and Credit Risk Appetite statement. The team supports the International Private banking business, Geneva being one of the Banks major international booking centers covering Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle-East.

Core accountabilities

This is an important role in the Geneva credit team supporting the growth of the Geneva lending portfolio and other credit products in a controlled, safe and profitable manner. Based in Geneva, the jobholder will have specific responsibility for credit approval across the Geneva platform covering a wide range of credit products.

Typical deals include mortgage financing, investment leverage lending facilities, single line of stock financings, and also the provision of a range of financial markets trading against a wide range of liquid security.

Credit Risk Management

Ensure the highest standard of credit quality through the structure, sanctioning, monitoring and control of credit applications and maintenance of these standards both personally and as part of the Credit Risk Team.

Preparation of papers and presentations to Barclays Wealth & Investment Management (W&IM) Credit Committee, Head of Credit Risk and other areas of the Group including Barclays Investment Bank.

Exercise judgement and discretion in the evaluation and approval/decline of credit proposals and collateral which lie outside credit policy as well as those within.

Challenge pricing in order to maximise value and ensure effective capital utilisation.

Responsibility for personal adherence to governance, compliance and lending portfolio controls.

Follow up of margin call and limit excess cases and agreeing action plans with bankers and / or clients.

Assist the Head of Credit in the preparation of regular Management Information and ad hoc reports.

Undertake administrative duties in support of the Credit Risk team.

Maintain a close working relationship with Private Bankers and segment heads/team leaders across the business and develop a detailed understanding of their portfolio and risk capabilities to add value.

Business Risk Partnership

Work in partnership with business colleagues and proactively anticipate, respond to and seek to exceed the expectations of customers.

Involvement at a preliminary stage to ensure effective development and delivery of bespoke Risk solutions for customers as appropriate.

Contribute to embedding agreed change management initiatives in support of process and quality improvements, cost reductions.

Deliver service in line with SLAs agreed with business segments.

Other Activities

Work closely with Barclays Group functions, leveraging Group capabilities.

Support the development and implementation of credit policy relating to new products and implementation of the credit monitoring and control of those products.

Liaising with Legal (both within W&IM and our external advisors) as required ensuring appropriate and efficient management of the lending book.

Role requirements

Professional/technical Experience

Understanding of credit risk in the Private Banking arena.

Credit Officer in Private banking business type products a plus.

Familiarity with traded products; futures, fx, options, derivatives.

Understanding of the regulatory and legal environment.

Fair understanding of credit facility documentation, both generic and bespoke; both vanilla and traded products.

Fair understanding of investment products and their suitability for collateralised lending and assessment of lending values for different financial asset classes.

Ability to build relationships with other teams and areas of the business.

Fair understanding of the PB Geneva market.

Academic And Professional Qualifications

Experience in Private banking / HNW credit risk management.

General or specific banking qualification or degree equivalence required.

Language Skills

Fluency in French & in English.
