Responsibilities
The Director, Portfolio Strategy and Operations is a new role in the Cardiovascular Metabolism Retina & Pulmonary Hypertension Therapeutic Area (CVMR & PH TA) and is a member of the Portfolio Strategy & Operations team who serve as a ‘Strategy & Operations Office’ for the TA and are responsible for
- Creating the strategic roadmap for the TA and providing transparency on the focus of investment behind portfolio opportunities including visibility on the success and risk profile of the pipeline of assets.
- Accountable for strategic and operational portfolio management for the TA; driving the process to define the strategic portfolio and optimizing portfolio delivery and path to resolution for functional resource conflicts.
- Developing and/or leading key strategic portfolio management processes and practices across the TA portfolio in partnership with key stakeholders to bridge the gap between the TA strategy and portfolio execution.
- Leading strategic initiatives based on the needs of the TA and key stakeholders, including setting operational priorities and management of efforts to improve the operational efficiency in portfolio delivery and integration of businesses and functions as reporting lines change and new businesses/assets are brought in.
- Building and maintaining strong collaboration within the TA and partnering functions.
Portfolio Strategy Development And Execution
- Work closely with the team to execute on specific strategic initiatives that will deliver the long-term CVMR & PH R&D strategy for example, integration of externally acquired assets and businesses.
- Conduct complex analytics and qualitative assessment to deliver insight.
- Integrate input from within the TA and functions in Janssen and J&J outside of R&D: Innovation Centers, Global Operations, PMO, finance and others.
- Ensure collaboration and alignment with partners for successful execution.
- Consolidate input from within and outside the TA and functional areas to ensure that all views are represented.
- Gain and incorporate deep external insights on the long-term view of healthcare and the pharmaceutical industry.
- Partner to deliver short-term execution on long-term strategic priorities while taking long-term strategy view and defining key near- and mid-term deliverables and measures.
- Lead / launch key growth and acceleration projects with the objective of helping translate thoughts into actions and actions into results.
- Give strategic input and operational expertise to CVMR & PH R&D management reviews, including scenario development, trade-off implications and the evaluation / assessment of portfolio investment opportunities.
- Collaborate successfully within the TA and partner functions to ensure the portfolio is aligned with the TA strategy.
- Effectively navigate the J&J network, leverage relationships and credibility to advocate for portfolio strategy & operations purpose, and influence key stakeholders and decision makers.
- Share responsibility, as a member of the TA Portfolio Strategy & Operations team, for talent development, including support of the departmental Talent Strategy and Human Resources Planning programs to meet current and future business needs.
- BSc/BA is required; degree concentration in science or business is highly preferred. Master’s degree in business (e.g., MBA) preferred
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in the global pharmaceutical industry required
- Experience and track record of supporting major change initiatives in pharmaceutical R&D and/or Commercial/Business Development or related function in a strategic role preferred
- Experience in the analysis and synthesis of complex data, including financial and operational data and profitability/productivity metrics required
- Ability in interpreting data and framing strategic options to inform action plans to improve performance required
- Experience in assessing technology, market environment, and R&D process requirements to successfully drive efficiency, optimization, and process improvements required
- Ability to translate data into information and strategies into executable action plans required
- Understanding of regulatory, legal, and ethical environment in pharmaceutical industry preferred
- Highest personal and ethical standards required
- Highly collaborative instincts, working with diverse stakeholders required
- Ability to influence and convince stakeholders at all levels of hierarchy required
- Ability to engage, motivate, and lead diverse teams required
- Strategic mindset with ability to execute strategy required
- Ability to identify improvement opportunities and innovate required
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including strong presentation and public speaking skills required
- Ability and willingness to work in a global matrix environment with cross-functional, international teams required
- Ability to travel 25%, domestic and global required
