Statistics & Decision Sciences (SDS) integrates broad and deep expertise across Janssen Research & Development in areas that range from Drug Discovery through Phases 2 and 3 clinical studies and post-market Medical Affairs and Real World Evidence, with Manufacturing Lifecycle support throughout. As part of Quantitative Sciences that comprises Statistics & Decision Sciences and Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacometrics, we work in cross-disciplinary teams and apply quantitative principles across the R&D portfolio to enable optimal decision-making at the earliest time point and in the most efficient manner. Statistics & Decision Sciences staff reside in the following worldwide locations: Raritan, NJ, Titusville, NJ, Spring House, PA, and La Jolla, CA in the USA; Beerse, Belgium, Leiden, The Netherlands, and Allschwil, Switzerland, in Europe; Shanghai, China, and High Wycombe, UK.

Job Description

Statistics & Decisions Sciences (SDS) focuses on statistical and data evaluation needs for discovery, clinical trials, manufacturing, and safety sciences data. The Scientific Computing Operations (SCO) team within SDS excels in delivering value to the community and its partners through the use of computer technology.

Primary responsibilities of the position includes identifying, establishing collaboration with, and supervision of external partners and their services at multiple locations. Strategic and technical leadership is required both internally and externally. This includes collaborations with statisticians, researchers, and information technology professionals. There is a large diversity of needs to serve, such as end-to-end management of software applications for statistical evaluation or for business processes, education in-classroom and e-learning, knowledge sharing, user interface navigation, software/application acquisition and training, and high performance computing for intensive data evaluation, simulations, and statistical research. Just as important a responsibility and accountability is formal management of a global team of direct reports and contract partners.

Other Responsibilities, Skills, And Knowledge Of The Position
  • Ensure proper software development, using sound software engineering principles and practices for design, development, integration, testing, installation, and change control across all projects;
  • Ensuring the continued success of the RStudio Shiny and related technologies platform for scientific and business application needs;
  • Possess excellent programming/coding skills;
  • Oversee and create solutions from cloud providers for flexible, high performance computing needs;
  • Continuously improve domain knowledge and understanding, including relevant statistics and data science techniques to interact effectively;
  • Constantly eager to expand communications and computing expertise. Strong intellectual curiosity at all times is a must, as is a learning mindset that values feedback and coaching;
  • Produce clear, concise, well-organized, and error-free documentation for software requirements, compliance, instructions, and communications;
  • Have or develop familiarity with health authority guidelines on reliability and validation;
  • Coordinate with external partners and resources for software development, software/application acquisition, configurations and customizations, and training;
  • Set strategies and establishing action plans for projects, including roles and responsibilities;
  • Manage multiple projects and prioritize to meet resources constraints and timelines;
  • Coordinate with internal information technology (IT) departments and individuals for alignment and compliance with company infrastructure, policies, standards, and practices;
  • For SDS needs, align with, and leverage, official company tools such as SharePoint, Office 365 Enterprise, Tableau, and mobile channels;
  • Serve on cross-functional teams and initiatives, and presents on behalf of Statistics & Decision Sciences.

The individual must also enjoy the process of building long-term collaborative relationships, be at ease with either a non-rigid or rigid structure to projects, and be organized in handling numerous projects simultaneously. Participation in external professional communities, and keeping up with technologies, is expected as well. Proficiency of R statistical software or similar Data Science programming language is highly desirable.

Qualifications
  • A Master’s degree in a Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics or related Quantitative Sciences field and 12+ years of experience or PhD in a Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics or related Quantitative Sciences field and 9+ years of experience is required;
  • Demonstrated team leadership and ability to collaborate in interdisciplinary teams;
  • Proficiency of general purpose programming/scripting languages and environments, such as Python or C. This will need to be demonstrated with evidence during the interviewing process.
  • Demonstrated written, oral, and personal communication skills;
  • Ability to work autonomously and within a team environment.
