Advanced Oncotherapy (AVO) is a specialist developer and provider of a breakthrough proton therapy system, the LIGHT system, which is the result of 25 years of work at CERN and ADAM.

Our focus is on developing and supplying technologies to maximise the destructive effect of radiation on tumours whilst minimising damage to the patient’s healthy tissues.

The first LIGHT system is being installed and commissioned at our test site at STFC Daresbury, in the north of England, where we will also carry out our first patient treatment, prior to shipping to our customer sites.

At AVO, we are passionate about our mission to defeat cancer and contribute to saving more lives with fewer side effects.

We have an exciting opportunity for an Electronics Engineer to join our team. The individual will be responsible for the design, test, and commissioning of electronic boards for power converter control. These boards feature: digital communication links (SFP+, Ethernet), FPGA based architecture, and high precision analogue front ends (ADCs and DACs with up to 10ppm precision). The role focuses on the design of low-level control electronics for power electronic converters. As part of the power converters team, the post holder is responsible for helping the team in the test, installation, and commissioning of power converters.

Key Responsibilities:

Area 1 Digital electronic circuits design and simulation

1. The post holder must become responsible for the design of FPGA and DSP based electronic control cards for power converters control. He must make sure all design files are properly documented and stored in one of the companies continuously backed up storage data system.

Area 2 Design, routing and testing of printed circuit boards

1. The post holder must create all the schematics and PCB using Altium Designer. The post holder must also be in charge of testing, and sometimes even assembling or soldering components.

Area 3 FPGA (VHDL) and DSP programming

1. The post holder must program FPGAs using VHDL language. In case of test files Verilog and System Verilog can also be accepted. All FPGA design files must be properly documented and stored in one of the companies continuously backed up storage data system

2. The post holder must program DSP and MCU systems using C language.

Area 4 Writing technical documentation

1. The post holder is responsible for creating and maintaining documentation of all his designs. This includes user requirements, technical specifications, schematics, test report, and user manual.

Area 5 Support the Power Converters Group in the operation, testing and commissioning of power converters

1. The post holder must test communication links such SFP+, Ethernet, etc.

2. The post holder must perform laboratory measurements of his produced designs, which involve the utilization of oscilloscopes, power supplies, voltage and current probes, and signal analyzers.

Requirements:

• Master’s degree in Electronics Engineering or equivalent.

• Experience in PCB design software

• Good level of spoken and written English with the ability to draw up technical texts.

• Previous experience in accelerator applications.

• Experience using Altium Designer.
