Reporting to the VP Advanced Technology, the Engineering / Scientific Senior Fellow will lead cross functional and cross sector teams to develop and deliver high value solutions required to achieve goals in technology, science, facilities, processes and products in key focus areas for Global Technical Operations. This Executive will provide technical support and leadership to top line growth (NPI, L&A, competitive advantage, IP, growing markets), enhance reliability, compliance and efficiency of product value chains end-to-end (e.g. support product life cycle management), and integrate Manufacturing Operations and Pharmaceutical Development in partnership with Value Chain Management and Customer Management through cutting edge solutions and insights.

The Senior Fellow plays a key role in Technical, Business and Strategic Leadership in support of technology initiatives, with the final aim of enabling new modalities, manufacturing technology, process control, process understanding, sensors, facility design, network strategy, manufacturing business systems, and integration with other functions, such as R&D, PES, Quality and Regulatory. Principal level competencies include Pharmaceutical manufacturing, products, and facilities.
  • Leads project management, influencing, change management, compliance orientation.
  • Leads Business Case development, business orientation, global mindset and management.
  • Provides overall program lor technical leadership for critical programs.
  • Creates, maintains and advances an overall strategy for manufacturing of the future.
  • Decision making / Problem solving - solves complex or unusual problems independently or through others, and develop recommendations or design. Is fully independent, providing strategic guidance and direction to others, able to self-direct, plan and execute. Escalates issues as appropriate.
  • Innovation / Creativity - leverages internal and external expertise to drive innovative solutions to meet program goals on a global level and exercises considerable judgment in developing new approaches and resolving issues. Applies innovative, new scientific methods or technologies to drive business results.
  • Pro-actively anticipates functional needs and evaluates and resolves complex organizational issues.
  • Offers solutions to help shape long-term strategies. Applies and/or leads application of technical and project management skills, described above, in the execution of strategic or project based initiatives.
  • Effectively manages others with diverse backgrounds and perspectives in a matrix structure. Manages support, specialists, and professional staff; may manage mid-size project teams.
  • Partners with, influences and obtains resources from a broad range of organizations within JnJ. Also requires building external relationships and influencing external partners to work jointly and harmoniously.
  • Identifies, pursues and maintains relationships with external partners, academic, professional and commercial, using TO, MTO and DPDS resources as needed. Identify areas of highest impact and value integrated with the platforms and sites, focusing on broad applicability and ease of introduction.
  • Maintains awareness and connection with academic and professional organizations to identify trends over the horizon to future proof Janssen’s capital spend, workforce and strategy.
  • Identifies needed skills and capabilities, opportunities and creates strategies for implementation.
  • Participates, influences and guides platform technology groups.
  • Provides a connection to and influences towards Quality, Regulatory, VCM, Engineering, Network Strategy, JJT, DNA and PES.
  • Establishes strong ties with sites and platforms to quantify the value of the deliverables and drives the necessary culture change.

The following interactions apply to both strategic and project assignments; frequency and nature of the interactions are based on project needs.

External: Academic professional and commercial providers of technical, analytical, and engineering solutions. Ability to form consortia or working groups is needed.

Internal: DPDS (DP-Technical Integrator, Drug Product Development, Packaging Development, Project Management, Analytical TI), JSC Project Management, TO & Site leadership, Quality, EH&S, JSC Site functions (including: Tech Service, Operations, Quality, Site leadership, Engineering, Maintenance, EH&S), JSC ESI, GTS platforms (API, Device, DP, Strategic Support & Management)

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree is required; Advanced degree is preferred
  • 15+ years of related work experience is preferred
  • Preferred candidate will have extensive experience with a proven track record of successful projects including field experience with science, technology, facilities, capital projects, manufacturing processes, and controls in a variety of modalities
  • Understanding of manufacturing cGMPs, Systems Qualification, Process Validations, process sciences, QbD, advanced analytical technology, PAT is preferred
  • Should be recognized as a multi-subject SME

Exposure to Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance cGMP and EH&S is preferred
  • Project Management qualifications are an asset
  • Operational Excellence experience in Lean, Process Excellence, and/or Design Excellence is desired
  • Ability to operate in a complex global matrix organization (e.g. multiple stakeholders, with limited guidance and supervision) is preferred
  • Ability to independently develop and/or assess Business Cases, perform feasibility studies, develop action plans related to Network and/or Assets Optimization, Processes Improvements, Costs and/or Quality improvements is preferred, and the ability to develop and access a network of Subject Matter Experts is preferred
  • Strong communication and leadership skills are highly preferred
  • Ability to travel 50%, including domestic and international travel, is required
