This internship is located in the Market Access Section of the Economic Cooperation and Trade Division, Economic Commission for Europe based in Geneva.

Responsibilities
The intern is expected to contribute to the work of the secretariat to the Working Party on Regulatory Cooperation and Standardization Policies as follows:
Under the supervision of the Secretary of WP.6 (Regulatory Cooperation and Standardization Policies), the intern will:
  • Assist in reinvigorate the activities related to education and standardization. This topic was high on the agenda around 2012 when the Recommendation I was revised. A network of learning institutes was identified, and their various programs captured. A few years have passed with a decrease in activity in this area. So, after assisting to prepare a short report on the current state of things, the main task will be to check the existing network and programs, verify that they still exist, identify any other institutes not within the current network to be added, identify any further training programs that should be added.
  • Assist with the training program on standardization. The START-Ed group has conceptualized a series of training modules to address education on standardization. This task will include identifying all areas which require future material to be developed and to bring together background research for these. Time permitting, this task will also include assistance in developing the training material.
  • Assist with the organization of a webinar on the topic to be organized before the end of the internship. This will include identifying the key themes that should be raised and potential speakers; the agenda for the event should be prepared by the end of the first month of the internship. This will allow the intern to become familiar with organizing a UN event.
  • Assist with communication tasks related to the education on standardization as well as all other activities of the Working Party 6. This will allow the intern to become familiar with the work of WP.6, to know the user community, identify other organizations in the same area. The tasks will include drafting of news pieces, press releases, leaflets… assisting with the update of content on the UNECE website and identification of outreach and communication opportunities through social media.
  • Provide general assistance to the Market Access Section for conferences, workshops and events.

Education
To qualify for the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
  • Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); (c) Have graduated with a university degree, as defined above, and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications;
  • For this internship, environmental studies, international relations, international law, social or political studies or equivalent are required.
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Russian and/or French is an asset.

Interns shall not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in the Secretariat for a period of six months following the end of their internship. United Nations Considerations

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity.
