They come together on a green, village-like campus covering 8 hectares. Students follow international and national curricula, with English, French and Bilingual programmes.

Main Purpose of the Role

The LS Head of Department will work closely with the Head of Student Support Services to lead the Learning support department. He/She is an experienced school teacher with a background which includes teaching in High School and at least one external examination course. He/She is qualified in Special Educational Needs.

His/Her pedagogical skills, as well as commitment, enthusiasm, and integrity, will allow him/her to act as an example to his/her fellow team members. His/Her personal skills, responsiveness, and flexibility will facilitate the dialogue and collaboration with his/her hierarchy and colleagues and the effective communication with parents, members of the community, and colleagues in other Nord Anglia schools.

Leadership Responsibilities

As the Head of Learning Support department, your main responsibilities will be to

· Actively promote the ethos of RISE (Respect, Internationalism, Spirit, Excellence).

· Develop strategic plans for the department, collaborating with colleagues and using data to inform and establish a Vision.

· Liaise with the Head of Student Support Services on the evaluation process, such that good practice can be recognised, refinements to learning support approaches made, and the level of performance documented.

· Oversee the induction of new Learning support and SEN staff into the department, including a mentor/buddy appointment for an initial induction period of at least the first three months of activity.

· Create and develop a positive team atmosphere.

· Provide leadership for the learning support department, ensuring that policies, protocols, and teaching are implemented and reviewed in accordance with the learning support and SEN policy.

· Compiling, and periodically checking a department inventory.

Duties and Other Responsibilities

· Arranging and chairing departmental meetings (structured and documented using an agenda and action/decision log for each meeting).

· Following and communicating both internal and external directives and other information.

· Representing the department at events such as school, staff, student, and parent meetings.

· Coordinating/facilitating communications between students, teachers, and parents/House Parents, particularly in relation to student academic performance and subject support.

· Checking Learning Support staff timetables (correct allocations, number of periods.).

Appraisal and Professional Development

· Guiding and supervising staff through the appraisal process.

· Ensuring that classroom practice across the department is consistent with CDL’s definitions of ‘Quality Learning’ and ‘Effective Teaching’ and Teacher Appraisal Criteria by:

o Undertaking class observations against these standards and giving feedback to staff.

o Establishing and monitoring Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs) where appropriate.

Professional Development

· Keeping abreast of developments in the department field and communicating these to staff.

· Arranging and advising on professional development activities which support staff in reaching CDL’s standards of ‘Effective Teaching’, the Nord Anglia Education and CDL Teaching Standards and their own professional objectives.

· Facilitating team building and cohesion.

Examinations

· Meeting examination board requirements.

· Assisting principals & teaching staff to plan room allocations for LS students during exam periods.

· Arranging exams and materials to be used for LS students during exam periods.

Quality Control

· Analyzing standardized test results and promoting ongoing improvement in performance.

· Liaising with Pastoral Heads and Homeroom Advisors to ensure smooth transitions between sections (checking student performance and supporting learning needs).

· Advising Principal(s) concerning the special needs of students (such as extra subject support, tutoring, learning support and/or individual programmes or online courses).

· Monitoring learning areas to ensure that the facilities support learning and are attractive, organised, functional, clean and safe.

People Planning of Learning Support staff

· Participating in the recruitment of new staff including Learning support staff to the department.

· Arranging and leading the induction of new staff into the department and school.

· Ensuring course and learning continuity for the students of absent teachers, particularly during a long-term absence.

Skills and Competencies

  • Sound teaching experience in multicultural environments and qualification in Special Needs Education.
  • Strong leadership skills: ability to drive a team, think strategically and take ownership.
  • Excellent organisational skills: methodical with a rigorous work approach.
  • Excellent communication skills: ability to create and maintain professional relationships; to practice active listening and show empathy; to communicate efficiently orally and in writing.
  • English mother tongue, bilingual in French would be a plus
