ABOUT THE ROLE

Human Rights abuses are happening all over the world at an alarming rate. Add to this, a global pandemic, a worrying rise in nationalism and accompanying attack on multilateralism. Amnesty International is looking for a dynamic and experienced senior advocate to join a team that dedicates every day to fighting back against these worrying trends. You will head the development, implementation and evaluation of Amnesty International’s (AI) advocacy strategies with the United Nations (UN) and other intergovernmental organisations, with a focus on the Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva

The Senior Advocate post is a full time nine-month fixed-term maternity cover based in Geneva.


JOB PURPOSE

Responsible for development and implementation of Amnesty International’s (AI) advocacy strategies with the United Nations (UN) and implementation of the organization’s recommendations.


ABOUT YOU

You are very familiar with the UN Geneva space and the relevant stakeholders working within it. You have the relevant experience to be able to pick up the work on a number of files and hit the ground running. You enjoy working as part of a team and collaborating with colleagues and partners around the world.


MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

You will monitor and analyze developments in the UN’s Human Rights Council and reports key developments to the IS and the Movement to enable effective and well-informed advocacy. You will guide the development, implementation and evaluation of AI international advocacy across regional and country strategic priorities as reflected in the sessions and mandates of the Human Rights Council, with a view to promoting and protecting human rights. You will conceptualise Human Rights Council international advocacy opportunities and imperatives, developing and informing strategies for advocacy for targeted regions and countries, with a view to improving the effectiveness of the UN in promoting and protecting human rights. You will conduct and deliver strategies and campaigns to improve the effectiveness of the Human Rights Council in promoting and protecting human rights.


SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • At least 5 years experience working with the UN in Geneva, for example as part of civil society or as a UN staff member
  • Relevant university level education. A post-graduate degree or equivalent in law, communications, political science, international relations or other relevant fields
  • Deep knowledge of the history, working methods, dynamics, politics, and mandate of the UN to protect and promote human rights
  • A sound intellectual and professional grasp of the role of multilaterally-sourced norms and standards, advocacy action, diplomatic pressure, and UN accountability mechanisms, in protecting and promoting human rights.
  • Knowledge of UN institutional processes and mandates as they relate to the protection and promotion of human rights, and a strong and demonstrable appreciation of the working relationship between the Human Rights Council and the rest of the UN human rights machinery.
