Global External Communications Manager

In this role you will be executing coordinated annual external communications strategy to increase awareness of and engagement with the Electrification Business Area, aligned to defined external communications KPIs. Leading a global team of four external communications professionals with functional responsibility for global media relations, thought leadership, social media and segment and solution comms, ensuring excellence in strategy and execution to deliver against KPIs. You will be collaborating with communications leaders across 6 Divisions, regions and markets to oversee content development and to ensure alignment on messaging. Leading on the development of global Electrification content and campaigns and collaborating with Group communications to ensure group-wide positioning for EL topics. Setting standards on global content development inc. global communications toolkits and guidelines and developing training to be rolled out across the business. You will also be collaborating effectively with a global network of stakeholders, including the EL leadership team and external communications professionals across EL, as well as with ABB Group Communications. Reporting to the Global Head of Communication of the Electrification Business, you will contribute to the continued global success of the business.

Your responsibilities

  • Devising and executing targeted global external communications strategy and campaigns that amplifying innovation leadership in Electrification (EL) and raising the visibility of the Business Area and its leaders around key business themes and segments and across all markets.
  • Influencing and supervising external communications outreach across the EL Business Area’s key markets and segments and coordinating with and supporting external communications professionals in the Divisions, regions and markets.
  • Building positive working relationships with a breadth of stakeholders from EL leadership to communications leaders across EL and Group, ensuring full alignment on all external communications plans and activity
  • Developing an annual media relations strategy, including specific KPIs against which all activity should be tracked and measured, developing an ongoing editorial calendar for media engagement, including thought leadership opportunities and trade shows, and execute with support of cross-business and cross-company teams and external agency support.
  • Managing all Group approvals for media activities together with the EL External Communications team, acting as spokesperson for ABB EL Business Area, responding to media enquiries.
  • Developing an annual social relations strategy, including specific KPIs against which all activity should be tracked and measured, overseeing ongoing social media activity for global EL channels, ensuring alignment with Group social media communications
  • Creating bank of engaging content for reuse by Group, Business Area, Divisions and local communicators including polls, infographics, video, GIFs etc. ensuring collaboration with EL branding colleagues
  • Developing an annual communications strategy plans and materials for key EL segments including Buildings, F&B, Utilities, Data Centers and Smart Cities in cooperation with EL global marketing and segment teams, including specific KPIs against which all activity should be tracked and measured.

Your background

  • BA/BS Degree in Marketing and Communications or Journalism
  • Minimum 10-15 years of global external communications experience within a large global, technology company.
  • Extensive media relations experience, thought leadership and crisis communications including well-versed in latest trends in digital communications, and media relations
  • Native English speaker mandatory, knowledge of any additional language a plus
  • Team leadership experience, having led and managed teams remotely
  • Excellent project management skills including budget and resource management
  • Experience working with C-level and Executive Board members on positioning and profiling them externally
  • Ability to flex between business/financial media and trade media with a clear understanding of the specific needs of different type of media
  • Experience with investor relations and financial reporting and communications would be a plus
  • Having worked in a highly matrixed organization and in coordinating with and working across geographies and businesses
  • Strong analytical/writing skills, able to support and own keynote presentations, executive talking points, media briefings
  • Superior spoken and written editorial skills, attention for detail and high-quality standards
