Result of Service
The following reports and documents should be delivered by the consultant:

  • Design and layout of a “Teacher Resource Book and Student Workbook” on plastic waste, covering approximately 120 pages and 21 illustrations/infographics;
  • Design and layout of approximately 17 awareness-raising materials (brochures, posters, leaflets etc.) on plastic waste, including approximately 35 illustrations/infographics;
  • Develop design concept for “Plastic is Forever” campaign products (interactive and static posters, social media cards, video intro and outro bumpers);
  • Develop an updated version of the BRS logo, including in animated formats, to be used on the BRS websites and social media channels, in reports and presentation templates, on corporate videos, on emails and letters.

Duties and Responsibilities

In 2017, the United Nations Environment Assembly called for increased action by relevant international and regional organizations and conventions, including among others the Basel and Stockholm Conventions, to prevent and reduce marine litter and microplastics, and their harmful effects. In 2019, at its 14th meeting, the Conference of the Parties to the Basel Convention decided to amend Annexes II, VIII and IX to the Basel Convention, thereby bringing plastic waste more comprehensively under the scope of the Convention.

As part of its technical assistance activities to support Parties in addressing plastic waste, the Secretariat has been developing technical contents of awareness-raising and educational materials. The current consultancy is to assist the Secretariat in developing design and layout of such awareness-raising and educational materials.

It contributes to the project “Further actions to address plastic waste under the Basel Convention” (BRS-Norad-2), funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), component 6 on public awareness and education campaign about plastic waste.

Under the general guidance of the Secretariat and in collaboration with an international subject matter expert and other relevant stakeholders, the consultant will carry out the following tasks:

1. Develop a full design and layout for the “Teacher Resource Book and Student Workbook”
1.1. Develop a design concept of the Student Workbook, covering approximately 120 pages and 21 illustrations/infographics. Refine them based on comments received by 23 February 2022.
1.2. Develop a first draft design/layout, including relevant infographics/illustrations and refine it based on comments received by 20 March 2022.
1.3. Develop the final design/layout, including relevant infographics/illustrations and refine it based on comments received by 8 April 2022.

2. Develop the design and layout of the Norad-2 awareness-raising materials (17 items)
2.1. Develop a design concept for approximately 17 awareness-raising materials (brochures, posters, leaflets etc.) on plastic waste, including approximately 35 illustrations/infographics. Refine these based on comments received by 16 March 2022.
2.2. Develop a first draft design/layout, including relevant infographics/illustrations; refine them based on comments received by 29 March 2022.
2.3. Develop the final design/layout, including relevant infographics/illustrations; refine them based on comments received by 8 April 2022.

3. Develop design concept for “Plastic is Forever” campaign products
3.1 Develop a design concept for interactive and static posters, social media cards, video intro and outro bumpers by 31 January 2022.
3.2 Finalise design concept based on comments received, by 15 April 2022.

4. Develop updated version of BRS logo
4.1. Develop an updated version of the BRS logo, including in animated formats, to be used on the BRS websites and social media channels, in reports and presentation templates, on corporate videos, on emails and letters, by 15 February 2022.
4.2. Finalise the design based on comments received, by 30 April 2022.

All materials should be prepared in consultation with the Secretariat and submitted electronically.

Qualifications/special skills
Academic Qualifications: Academic qualification: A university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in graphic design, communications or related discipline is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience: • At least 7 years of experience in graphic design and communication is required;
  • Experience in developing infographics, story maps and similar communication products is required;
  • Proficiency in using graphics design and audiovisual communication software is required;
  • Knowledge on environmental topics, sustainable development, the multilateral environmental agreements of chemicals and waste, and the work of international organizations is desirable;
  • Previous demonstrable work on topics related to waste management and other environmental topics is an asset.
Language: Language: Fluency in English is required.
