Head of New Technology Initiatives

Role Purpose

Role: The Head of New Technology Initiatives is responsible for identifying and developing key vectors of data-driven non-incremental innovation in support of Syngenta Group’s commitment to advance and optimize sustainable productivity on the farm.

These vectors, which span across different disciplines within the Company, should include themes such as: Precise/smart Application of crop protection, crop care and nutrition; Data-driven soil health programs, and other innovative themes.

The scope of the Role shall include the prototyping of select Strategic Digital Initiatives derived from the chosen vectors and their further development through a commercial pilot phase and subsequent handoff.

The scope of the Role shall also include the building of a center of excellence for gathering and processing diverse agronomically-relevant soil data to be leveraged across the entire group in support of the Group Soil Health Strategy and overall scientific and commercial objectives.

Accountabilities
  • Optimize sustainable productivity on the farm, through finding the right digital solution for the right problem.
  • Lead the identification, development, and piloting of Strategic Digital Initiatives (SDIs) starting with initiatives linked to HD Soil Data and to Precision Application.
  • Explore new initiatives such as enhanced food security/reduced post-harvest loss by using sensing, and data analysis to monitor and optimize post-harvest processes & treatments, including the smart application of innovative biologicals and GRAS post-harvest products.
  • Build strong implementation teams for each initiative with emphasis on their capabilities to take ownership of the initiatives, closely collaborate with growers and bring new technologies to the fields.
  • Explore and prototype business models and go-to-market strategies for the Strategic Digital Initiatives.
  • Identify and harness technologies, services, and partnerships to complement, enhance and leverage the various SDIs.
  • Design and drive the Digital Soil Health Strategy.
  • Represent the Digital Team at different Soil Health forums and represent the Group Soil Health program within the Digital Team.
  • Build internal and external networks related to Precision Applications, Digital Soil Health, and other SDIs.
  • Establish regular dialog within Digital & IT on transformative/disruptive ag innovation resulting in tangible outcomes which requires collaboration & partnership across various business and ITD functional areas, e.g. transforming the existing go-to-market models.
Qualifications

Knowledge, experience & capabilities:

Critical knowledge
  • Hands-on experience in data-driven agriculture including precision application.
  • Good understanding of Soil Science through academic training and through practical work/field experience.
  • Fundamental understanding of soil health and regenerative agriculture principles.
  • Knowledge of the ag innovation ecosystem.
Critical Experience
  • 10+ years in ag business including building product/service from ground up.
  • 3+ years of experience in precision agriculture including hands-on experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in business strategy.
  • 7+ years management experience.

Critical success factors & key challenges
  • Develop a number of strong, innovative SDI programs led by teams which take ownership of their respective challenging and innovative Initiatives and successfully take them to the field.
  • Develop a compelling Digital Soil Health Strategy which is integral to the Group Soil Health Strategy and empowers it.
  • Create a Center of Excellence for sensing, gathering, and processing diverse, agronomically-relevant high-quality soil data in close collaboration with the Data Science team.
  • Challenge: Bring current SDI (variable-rate weed control optimization by soil type) to commercial pilot and then launch in collaboration with Digital Team colleagues and with local commercial units.
  • Challenge: Build sufficient credibility and influence with the different business units to effectively elicit support for SDIs and increase their impact.
