The Opportunity

Roche Information Solutions (RIS) is charged with building a modern software stack that will improve the processes and clinical decision support in healthcare. Our challenge is to bring together complex diagnostic and treatment data from medical devices and IT systems within healthcare institutions and hospitals, and intelligently process and present this data to doctors and healthcare providers to improve patient care.

To make bold steps towards our ambitions, we’re looking for a Head of Terminologies & Semantics to join our team. Being a part of the Data Science Technologies leadership team, this role is crucial to build a highly efficient environment to drive data interoperability and usage of ontologies and/or terminologies across digital products and systems within Diagnostics. With that, the role will contribute fundamentally to make data FAIR for Diagnostics.

You will be responsible to…

• Lead a multidisciplinaryteam of specialists in semantics, data modeling, terminologies and healthcare data standards

• Develop skills and competencies that are needed to form a high-performing, empowered team of experts and contributors

• Drive and coordinate sourcing and staffing decisions within the respective Sub-Chapter into squads, track and manage capacity planning

• Develop and align a north-star and strategy for the sub-chapter in concert with Data Service objectives

• Deliver, develop and drive adoption of the terminology & semantics technology and service portfolio

• Foster and drive innovation that will change the way we work with and utilize ontologies, standards and semantic technologies

• Work closely with various chapters, functions and networks to ensure project priorities and decisions are consistent between teams and strategic plans.

• Foster communities in the space of semantics and ensure active exchange with other teams across the Roche group and external key opinion leaders and pioneers in the field

As Head of Terminologies & Semantics you have

• Work experience of minimum 5 years preferably in the pharmaceutical / medical device environment (experience in diagnostics is a plus)

• Minimum of three works working in a leadership role

• PhD in Data Science related fields (Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Bioinformatics or similar areas of academic discipline)

• Strong background in semantic technologies, data standards and ontologies (such as RDF frameworks, data models in healthcare such as OMOP, LOINC, DUO from Global Alliance for Genomics and Health, knowledge graphs etc. )

• Strong collaboration and organizational development skills

• Ability to work in changing, agile, multinational and multiple location environment

• Ability to act as a true servant leader

• Very good communication skills

• Very good presentation and moderating skills

• Fluency in English

Locations

The role will be based in Basel or Penzberg. At the Company’s discretion, an exception to the location requirement could be made under extraordinary circumstances.

As this position is a global role, international business travel will be required depending upon the business location of the successful candidate and ongoing business project activities.
