This profile is for the sole purpose of the Internship Programme of the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development in Geneva. There should be no expectation of employment within the UN after an internship. Interns shall not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, positions at the professional level and above carrying international recruitment status in the Secretariat for a period of six months following the end of their internship. UN internships are unpaid and full-time, i.e. an intern is expected to work five days per week, eight hours per day.

This internship position is offered under the remote modality of teleworking. To work remotely the applicant shall have full access to a computer with a modern browser in which to run the latest version of Office 365 applications that will allow him/her to perform the tasks within the scope of the internship. The computer must have basic IT security best practices implemented. At a minimum, the applicant should have:
  • Installed in his/her computer the latest version of the Microsoft Windows operating system, software and security updates as soon as they are issued.
  • Enabled the built-in software firewall that comes with the operating software of the computer.
  • Be able to use the password manager enabling the creation of strong passwords and to secure access to all UNCTAD/UN/related resources.

This position is located in the Division on Technology and Logistics (DTL) of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in Geneva. The intern will be involved in projects and tasks related to the ASYCUDA programme.
The UNCTAD Automated System for Customs Data is an integrated customs management system for international trade and transport operations in a modern automated environment. Advanced software applications are designed and developed for customs administrations and the trade community to comply with international standards when fulfilling import, export and transit related procedures.
Through its ASYCUDA Programme, UNCTAD aims at: - Modernizing customs operations and helping to improve revenue collection, -Facilitating trade efficiency and competitiveness by substantially reducing transaction time and costs, - Improving security by streamlining procedures of cargo control, transit of goods and clearance of goods, - Helping fight corruption by enhancing the transparency of transactions, - Promoting sustainable development by cutting down on the use of paper, through the use of electronic transactions and documents.

This internship is for four months starting in February 2022 (date to be agreed) with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Responsibilities

As part of the continued cooperation between the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the ASYCUDA programme of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the two partners are working on the incorporation of IATA cargo XML standard messages within the processing ASYCUDA cargo module through a dynamic mechanism. Airlines, freight forwarders, couriers and express operators will be able to use this global standard for the electronic exchange of air cargo with customs authorities at airports. So far, the two partners succeeded in integrating the following three messages among the five chosen in the cooperation strategy - XFFM for the flight manifests XML message - XFWB for the XML master air waybills messages - XFZB for the XML house air waybills messages.

As part of the implementation of the defined strategy by the Programme for improving these air freight exchanges, it was decided to provide the ASYCUDAWorld software with the following two remaining messages: - XFHL, key message to link house airwaybills to their appropriate masters and properly integrate postal consignments - XTMV, transport movement message intended to send departure and arrival notifications immediately after the departure or arrival of an aircraft. The delay, cancellation and diversion of a plane will also be distributed via XTMV as soon as they are known. This message is an asset for the arrival confirmation’s automation in the ASYCUDAWorld system. 1) The candidate must be able to transform the XSD validation structures for the XFHL and XTMV XML messages into Java objects which will be the basis for processing, validation, and subsequent development. The candidate must be able to generate a library for these classes and make it accessible from the ASYCUDAWorld system. 2) The design of the necessary structures (tables, indexes, and primary keys) for the management of the two messages in a standard database management system (DBMS). The design must respect the structure of the messages, the type and length of the defined fields as well as the data which must be mandatory and provided by the airline industry. The candidate must ensure the proper functioning of the structures management when adding, retrieving, modifying, and deleting the messages. The candidate will be able to use the Oracle database management system and use the Oracle SQL developer database management tool. 3) JAVA being the main programming language of the ASYCUDAWorld system, the candidate should design the classes, entities, rules, and required automatic tasks for the integration of the two messages XTMV and XFHL. The candidate must ensure the compatibility of his solution with the already existing ASYCUDAWorld structure to integrate these messages via web service and via email exchanges. The candidate should use the open-source software Eclipse IDE to undertake these developments and exchange/discuss with his mentor / supervisor. Confirmation or error messages must respect the XFNM structure which will be introduced and explained by the supervisor / supervisor 4) The candidate should deploy and test the web services of both two messages via the Apache Tomcat tool. The exchange of messages by email can be simulated and tested by an email server of the candidate’s choice. 5) The design and documentation of test scenarios which cover all the technical specificities to be tested for the two messages in question

More generally, interns shall:
1. Observe all applicable rules, regulations, instructions, procedures and directives of the Organization notwithstanding their status as described in section 4 of the UN Internship Programme Administrative Instructions ST/AI/2000/9 & ST/AI/2005/11.
2. Provide the receiving departments/offices with a copy of all materials prepared by them during the internship. The UN shall be entitled to all property rights, including but not limited to patents, copyrights and trademarks, with regard to material which bears a direct relation to or is made in consequence of, the services provided under the internship. At the request of the UN, the interns shall assist in securing such property rights and transferring them to the UN in compliance with the requirements of the applicable law.
3. Respect the impartiality and independence required of the UN and of the receiving department/office and shall not seek or accept instructions regarding the services performed under the internship agreement from any Government or from any authority external to the UN.
4. Unless otherwise authorized by the appropriate official in the receiving department/office, they may not communicate at any time to the media or to any institution, person, Government or any other external source any information which has become known to them by reason of their association with the UN or the receiving department/office, that they know or ought to have known has not been made public. They may not use any such information without the written authorization of the appropriate official, and such information may never be used for personal gain. These obligations also apply after the end of the internship with the UN.
5. Refrain from any conduct that would adversely reflect on the UN or on the receiving department/office and will not engage in any activity which is incompatible with the aims and objectives of the UN.

Education

The United Nations internship programme is intended to exposestudents or recent graduates to the United Nations in order to enhance their educational experience and to help them to gain experience in the work of the Organization. Therefore, applicants to the programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written in English is required for this internship. Knowledge of French or Spanish is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
