The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UNEP’s trade related work is vested in the belief that the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda offers many opportunities for sustainable trade, production and consumption in order to address three substantial challenges: combating climate change, preserving nature and biodiversity and achieving zero pollution.
The overall objective of the Resources and Markets Branch of UNEP is to conserve the environment, reduce poverty and promote sustainable development by enhancing the capacity of governments, businesses, and civil society to integrate environmental considerations into economic, trade and financial policies and practices. As part of this effort, the Environment and Trade Unit provides analysis, policy-related advisory services and capacity-building assistance at the national-level to emerging economies around four key areas, in direct alignment with elements of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development:

1)Enhancing trade and investment in environmentally sound technologies
2)Shaping governance at the trade, investment and environment nexus
3)Green markets and global value chains
4)Reducing the footprint of trade and greening the brown
Within this context, the intern will work assisting in preparing concept notes, briefings, project proposals and presentations; contribute to outreach and communications activities, stakeholder meetings, workshops and events; assist with the development of tools such as policy manuals, toolkits and online learning courses to support capacity building; and carry out an array of research and analysis related to the nexus of trade and environment. The focus of the internship can be discussed and tailored to the intern’s interests and development needs.

The Economy Division/ ETPU internship is for six (6) months.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.

Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Head, Environment and Trade Hub, Resources and Markets Branch, UNEP (office), the intern will:
  • Support the preparation of concept notes, briefings, project proposals and presentations on environment and trade policies in general and for specific countries or topics such as environmental goods and services, green global value chains, environment in free trade agreements, trade in clean technologies, green industry and trade, trade and resilience, etc.;
  • Contribute to outreach and communication activities such as conferences, meetings, workshops, design and management of web pages, newsletters, social media, infographic, brochures and other communication materials;
  • Support the review and development of tools, methodologies, implementation guidance and other knowledge products for capacity building activities under the Environment and Trade Hub, such as online learning courses, policy manuals and toolkits;
  • Carry out research, including literature review, data collection and analysis on the trade and environment nexus; support the preparation of presentations;
  • Provide team support and other tasks as necessary; liaise with colleagues from other relevant teams when needed
  • French language is an advantage but not a requirement.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with a university degree.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

The candidate should have demonstrated interest in the environment. Some knowledge of the interface of environmental and trade issues and policies is helpful. Training in Economics, Environmental Policy, International Law, International Relations, or related fields. Previous experience in Communications an advantage

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
