UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering a full-time internship within the Greening and Sustainability Team of the Global Mobility and Infrastructure Services under the Division of Financial and Administrative Management (DFAM) at UNHCR Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

Established in December 1950, UNHCR is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for asylum seekers, refugees, returnees, internally displaced communities and stateless people. Every year, millions of men, women and children are forced to flee their homes to escape conflict and persecution. UNHCR currently operates in over 130 countries, using its long expertise to protect and care for millions.

Organizational context

In 2007, the UN Climate Neutral Strategy was developed, and organizations committed to move their respective organizations to climate neutrality. Since then, UNHCR has continuously improved its efforts in promoting the careful use of energy resources by refugees, host communities, partner organizations and as a priority by UNHCR itself. In 2019, UNHCR developed its Global Strategy for Sustainable Energy 2019-2024 which aims to enable persons of concern to UNHCR to meet their energy needs in a safe and sustainable manner. It also launched the Clean Energy Challenge and is currently working on a first comprehensive Strategic Framework on Climate Action.

The UNHCR Greening And Sustainability Strategy Focuses On Three Main Areas

In 2020, UNHCR developed a new internal Greening and Sustainability strategy in order to improve its environmental performance, climate compatibility and resource efficiency.

Green Box: measure global energy consumption of UNHCR offices in order to migrate from fossil fuels to renewable energy

Procure and install electricity meters in all UNHCR offices; create centrally managed dashboard with real-time data; carry out energy audits of UNHCR offices; and prepare business cases for each UNHCR office to identify alternative energy options.

Green Fund: Develop innovative financing model to migrate UNHCR offices from fossil fuels to renewable energy

Establish internal UNHCR Green Revolving Fund to convert UNHCR Operations from diesel to renewable energy; use the Fund to procure from private sector independent power producers through Power Purchase Agreements; aim to achieve positive carbon impact and positive financial impact to budget (cost effective).

Green Data: Implement dynamic technology platform for real-time monitoring and data visualization

Establish systems and policies for real-time, high quality data collection of GHG emissions, energy, waste and water across UNHCR; create data warehouse and dashboards for easy monitoring, reporting and decision-making.

The position

During The Internship The Incumbent Will Acquire The Following

¿ Knowledge on UNHCR¿s mandate, programmes and environmental activities at HQ and in the field.

¿ Knowledge in key environmental related sectors.

¿ Knowledge on the Strategy for Sustainability Management in UNHCR and the UN System 2020-2030.

¿ Experience of coordination, information collection and report drafting.

Duties and responsibilities

Assist The Greening And Sustainability Project Coordinators In Providing Support If Data Collection And Data Management Related To The Green Data Initiative
  • Support the UNHCR Greening the Blue report with
  • Data collection of environmental and energy related data;
  • Communication and follow up with Country Focal points;
  • Data quality assurance.
  • Assist in the development of new and ad-hoc reports in Greening and Sustainability related initiatives.
  • Support the team on advocating for Greening and Sustainability initiatives.
  • Assist in developing the project visibility, as well as internal and external communication strategies and actions.
  • Assist with updating and administering internal databases and tools related to Green Data.
  • Provide any other required support, including administrative support to the team¿s staff.
  • Perform data collection for energy and environmental related indicators at site, office and country from primary or secondary data sources.
  • Maintain data sets and systematically code and enter data points into centralized dataset, ensuring consistency and transparency in approach.
  • Continuously scan for new and developing information in order to increase accuracy of information.
  • Double check data quality through spot-checks and verification exercises.
Area of work may be adapted in the course of the internship to better fit the intern¿s interests and profile as well as the Section¿s needs.

Minimum Qualifications Required

In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:

¿ Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within one year of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO ; and

¿ Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.

NOTE: An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.

Desirable Qualifications And Skills

¿ Bachelor¿s or Master¿s degree or specific studies in Environmental Studies; Environmental Engineering; Environmental Science; Economics: Business Administration; Finance; or other closely relevant field.

¿ Excellent English oral and writing skills are required. Working knowledge of a second UN official language is an asset.

¿ Familiarity or experience with data collection and data analysis of data.

¿ Accountability, communication, teamwork and collaboration, commitment to continuous learning, client and result orientation skills.

¿ Planning and organizing competencies.

Conditions

It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 9.00am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday (40 hours per week). The successful candidate will be either home-based or with the team in the Geneva, Switzerland. The location will be determined prior to the start of the internship, and is dependent upon the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic in both the applicant¿s home country and at the duty station.

Allowance: Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
