The Digital Biomarker data analysis team of pREDi is looking for an intern in the area of ML/AI.The team is at the forefront of the digital health space, with regular deployments of digital health solutions in clinical studies of neurological diseases, including Huntington’s Disease (HD). HD is a genetic, neurodegenerative and ultimately fatal disease characterised by cognitive, behavioural, and motor symptoms. The most characteristic physical symptoms are jerky, uncontrollable movements called chorea. The intern will work on identifying chorea events and predicting the severity of chorea using motion sensor data collected during the daily life of study participants with the Roche HD Remote monitoring platform. This platform has been used in several clinical HD studies and has collected more than 355 participant years of passive monitoring data.

We are looking for individuals who:
  • Want to apply their ML (machine learning) /AI (artificial intelligence) skills to complex real-life data
  • Are motivated by contributing to measurement solutions that help bring new therapies to patients to fight disease
  • Are creative problem solvers, quick learners, and have demonstrated high productivity

Responsibilities:
  • Design, build and interpret machine learning algorithms to predict chorea from the raw IMU ( accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer) data or derived features
  • Collaborate with the host team and other stakeholders to evaluate results and discuss next steps
  • Proactively share learnings and knowledge with both the project team and the wider Roche Advanced Analytics community
  • Advance machine learning and artificial intelligence within Roche

Experience and Competencies Preferred:
  • Knowledge of a wide range of machine learning techniques and applications, including deep learning and random forests
  • Experience applying machine learning algorithms and techniques to real-life data, preferably to healthcare data
  • Experience with HPC cluster and/or cloud computing and workflow tools like Snakemake
  • Very good programming skills with Python
  • Experience implementing reproducible research practices like version control (e.g. using Git)
  • Demonstrated contributions to open source packages, libraries or functions are a big plus
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

Qualifications Required:
  • MSc/PhD degree candidate in Data Science related field (e.g., Statistics, Mathematics, Epidemiology, Bioinformatics, Health Economics, Outcomes Research, Computer Science)
  • Proficient in English
