This position is located in the Exploratory Neurobiology Section within the Neuroscience and Rare Diseases (NRD) in Basel, Switzerland. The Exploratory Neurobiology Section focuses on understanding the pathomechanisms related to neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease and the development of novel therapeutics.Job missionWe are looking for an individual with high interest and determination to improve the lives of patients suffering from devastating neurodegenerative disorders. You will contribute to the identification and optimization of drug candidates from different modalities (small and large molecules, oligonucleotides, gene therapy, etc.) by assessing their potential in cell culture and animal models and characterizing the mechanism of action. You will be involved in exploratory research to find new targets and perform proof-of-concept studies to validate novel targets. You will be part of an existing research lab and have the full opportunity to work in close collaboration with multidisciplinary experts to reach all together our goal to provide patients with innovative, safe and life changing treatments.- establishment of ipsc-derived neuronal/glia models to recapitulate aspects of neurodegenerative disorders
- phenotypic and functional characterization of iPSC-derived neuronal and glial cells and understanding the effect of pharmacological or genetic modifications
- Ex vivo analysis of tissues to characterize disease models and understand treatment effects
- Design, preparation and execution of experiments and data interpretation
- Coordinate and manage outsourcing of work packages to CROs
- Communication and presentation of results to the team
- High commitment to work with a proactive mindset and in close collaboration with the team and project members in order to effectively advance exploratory and portfolio projects
- MSc in Life Sciences (cellular/molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, pharmacology, neuroscience) or, alternatively, BSc or completion of an apprenticeship for a research associate (“Lehrabschluss”) with ≥3 years industry experience
- Experience in pluripotent stem cell cultivation, in vitro differentiation towards neurons and glia, as well as cellular and molecular characterization thereof
- Expert user of imaging tools such as for example confocal or high-content imaging with image analysis
- Hands-on experience in ex vivo tissue processing for immunohistochemistry, biochemical or immunoassays
- Experience in biochemistry and molecular biology
- Strong critical thinking, communication and organization skills
- Certification (LTK1, FELASA B or similar) and willingness to performing in vivo animal experiments is a big plus
- Programming /coding experience advantageous
- Experience with overseeing/managing work at CROs advantageous
