  • Deliverables will help UNEP deliver its mandates on Green and Sustainable Chemistry Manuals, in particular dissemination and use by stakeholders (including through e-learning course).
  • Deliverables will further support illustration of Green and Sustainable Chemistry, in relevant sectors, and support the development of UNEP’s work in relevant sectors and contribute to ICCM5 and the beyond 2020 on chemicals and waste.
  • Deliverables on activities related to used lead-acid batteries and lead paint will help UNEP deliver its mandates adopted at the second session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM 2) and on mandates from the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) 3 and 4.

Background (Org. Setting)

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The overall objective of the UNEP’s Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.

The Knowledge and Risk Unit gathers, compiles and analyses state of the art information and data, including through monitoring activities, inventories and assessments, to allow policy-makers to make informed decisions on the sound management of chemicals and waste. The Unit executes projects and covers topics related to persistent organic pollutants, endocrine disrupting chemicals, and chemicals in products, among others. The Unit also addresses issues of concern highlighted by governments, such as antimicrobial resistance, and assists in implementing mandates received through the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) on the GCO-II, sustainable chemistry and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

The consultant will support as per the timeline indicated above, including the following tasks:
  • Organize outreach events on Green and Sustainable chemistry.
  • Develop and update awareness raising materials, documents, technical briefings on Green and Sustainable Chemistry, and other UNEP reports as needed, in preparation for ICCM5 and UNEA-6.
  • Support further development of Green and Sustainable Chemistry Learning materials through collaboration with UNITAR, and other relevant organizations, organization of consultations and desk research.
  • Provide inputs and develop materials to support the integration of Green and Sustainable Chemistry in high impact sectors, with illustrations of Green and Sustainable chemistry applied to high impact sectors, such as textiles, buildings, toys and electronics.
  • Continue to develop and upload content to webpages for Green and Sustainable Chemistry.
  • Prepare reports and support organization of related workshops and meetings.
  • Provide inputs into to final reports of the GEF project Component 1 - Lead in paint;
  • Provide support to UNEP activities on further dissemination of the GEF project Component 1 - Lead in paint results;
  • Provide inputs into developing the draft agenda’s, interventions and follow-up for the Chair - Secretariat meetings, GAELP Advisory Council meeting and Global meetings;
  • Provide inputs in preparing quarterly GAELP newsletter and other dissemination materials.
Qualifications/special Skills

Master’s degree or equivalent in a field related to environment/health/natural sciences. Two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the university degree.

At least two years of relevant experience, in a field related to international chemicals and waste management, Green and Sustainable Chemistry.

Experience with the UN is an advantage.

Languages

English is the working language of UNEP. Fluent written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of another UN language would be an asset.
