OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMMEThe Department of Epidemic and Pandemic Prevention and Preparedness (EPP), in the WHO Health Emergencies Programme, advances global efforts to prevent and control existing and emerging infectious diseases by increasing access to evidence-based interventions; fostering impactful innovation; and leveraging technical, operational and strategic partnerships. In addition, EPP develops global mechanisms to facilitate coordination and collaboration betweencountries and multi-sectoral partners for catastrophic events of natural, accidental or deliberate origin. The department of EPP is committed to delivering GPW13 Outcome 2.2 Epidemics and pandemics prevented, through: Delivering risk assessment, technical guidance, interventions and controlstrategies for country impact- Promoting innovation and adoption of new technologies- Aligning and coordinating international action through trustedpartnership- Ensuring vulnerable populations have access to life-saving interventions and supplies. The Emerging Diseases and Zoonoses (EZD) team develops strategies, guidance, global mechanisms and interventions to address high threat pathogens responsible for epidemics or pandemics thereby reducingtheir impact on affected populations and limiting their international spread.This team deals with known emerging and re-emerging high threat pathogens suchas (i) zoonotic diseases (for example Nipah virus and Hendra virus); (ii)arboviruses (for example zika and chikungunya); (iii) respiratory pathogens(for example MERS and plague); and (iv) bio-risks (for example smallpox).Description Of DutiesWithin the framework of the delegated authority, the incumbent is assigned all or part of the following responsibilities: 1. To lead the secretariat functions in supporting the SAGO in carrying out the functions outlined in the TOR’s. 2. To provide crucial material support WHO Secretariat leads of the TAG-VE and TAG-COVAC; 3. To manage and organize meetings of the AGs; in combination with the technical staff supporting the secretariat to provide support for meeting logistics, meeting reports and any other associated tasks. 4. Responsible for working with the Chair and Co-Chair to ensure the work progresses according to the AG work plans, support technical requests by the Ads and other tasks.5. Take a lead role in the communications around the AGs, in collaboration with supervisor and communications colleagues from WHO.6. Provide discernible input for the AGs in respect of requests, depending on available resources (such as literature searchers, systematic reviews on relevant topics). 7. Maintain and further strong collaborations with other teams/departments at WHO, other WHO advisory groups (STAG-IH, OHHLP, TAG-B, etc) and other partner agencies to cover the various aspects of the AGs functions. 8. Actively promote and advance multi-disciplinary, cross-cutting approaches to work and facilitate participation in such approaches. 9. Perform other related duties, this may include similar functions for other technical advisory groups, as required by the supervisor.Required QualificationsEducationEssential: Advanced level university degree in medicine or epidemiology with emphasis on infectious diseases.Desirable: MD and/or PhD degree in one of the above fields.ExperienceEssential: At least 10 years of combined experience working on infectious diseases and public health programs for the control and prevention of infectious diseases and public health issues. Demonstrated work experience implementing One Health programs and with work the animal human interface. Demonstrated work experience at the international level.Desirable: Experience in field research in developing countries Experience in epidemic diseases and/or in pandemic diseases. Proven primary responsibility for managing cross-cutting initiatives. Involving different departments or organizational entities in a multinational context such as the UN, WHO or similar. Proven primary responsibility in developing strategies in prevention and control of infectious diseases.SkillsTheoretical and practical knowledge of infectious disease epidemiology and emerging diseases, in particular pathogens capable of causing epidemic and pandemic diseases. Proven understanding of the management of acute and urgent public health responses, including infectious disease outbreaks. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 90,664 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 5810 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.Additional Information
