Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

Located within the UN Environment Division of Economy, the Resources & Markets Branch (UNEP-RMB) seeks to conserve the environment, reduce poverty, and promote sustainable development by enhancing the capacity of governments, businesses, and civil society to integrate environmental considerations into economic, trade, and financial policies and practices in accordance with the partnership and integrated policy-making approaches of sustainable development.

As part of UNEP-RMB, the UNEP Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is a unique global partnership between the UNEP and the private financial sector. UNEP FI works closely with over 200 financial institutions that are signatories to the UNEP FI Statements of Environmental Commitment, and a range of partner organizations to develop and promote linkages between the environment, sustainability and financial performance. Through its industry commissions, thematic advisory groups and regional activities, UNEP FI carries out its mission to identify, promote, and realize the adoption of sustainability practice at all levels of financial institution operations.

UNEP FI is a founding partner of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), alongside UNDP, WWF and Global Canopy and a funding partner to the TNFD (via the GEF project in support of TNFD). It is also a member of the Stewardship group and implementation partner through UNEP FI-led pilot program in support of the TNFD. The TNFD consists of various groups which compose the TNFD Alliance. At the centre up to 35 Taskforce Members, led by the TNFD Co-Chairs (Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, Executive Secretary of United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and David Craig, former CEO and Founder of Refinitiv). The taskforce members have an estimated US$19,4tn in total assets, a global reach with 16 countries in 5 continents, they include 12 out 22 business sectors most at risk according to the WEF Nature Risk Rising report and have a 45% overlap in membership with the TCFD. The Taskforce is supported by the TNFD Forum, a consultative grouping of institutional supporters which has grown to over 500 members to date. The Taskforce and Forum are managed and coordinated by the TNFD Secretariat, which also convenes and directs a TNFD Knowledge Hub, consists of 16 Knowledge Partners.

UNEP FI executes the WWF-US-implemented GEF-funded project in support of the TFND. The GEF project objective is to support the establishment of TNFD to develop and disseminate a global framework for corporates and financial institutions to assess, manage and report on their dependencies and impacts on nature. The GEF funding, as the multilateral financing instrument of the Convention on Biological Diversity, complements other support to TNFD to provide a framework to report and act on nature-related risks, and also help support the enabling conditions for a shift in financial flows away from nature-negative and toward nature-positive impacts. The project will support development of the TNFD through UNEP FI execution in accordance with the work plan described in the GEF project document and annual approved work plan and budget. As GEF agency, WWF US works with UNEP-FI under Project Steering Committee guidance to adjust the GEF project as needed during implementation to support achievement of the TNFD deliverables.
