Performance Building Solutions (PBS), as business unit within W&P Shelter, is a leading global provider of value-added solutions in the areas of weatherization, air sealing, thermal comfort and fire protection systems for the building and construction market. PBS’s Applications Development is comprised of a dynamic group of professionals including application development engineers, code compliance specialists, project leaders and building scientists. This R&D team works to ensure that input from customers and key market influencers is used to build PBS’s innovation pipeline as well as to guide PBS’s new product development, product application expansion, standards development and code compliance strategy. The Applications Development team plays a key role in developing and executing test plans to expand viable applications for existing products, to qualify new products and to demonstrate products meet building code requirements. The team works closely with Strategic Marketing, Tactical Marketing, the Building Knowledge Center (BKC) and the Advocacy teams to address complex customer inquiries and to develop advantaged industry positions for PBS, respectively.

Responsible/Essential Functions:

This Laboratory Technician role offers an exciting, unique opportunity to help grow, improve, and maintain many of Shelter’s flagship brand products like Tyvek® Wraps, GREAT STUFF™ foams and FROTHPAK™ foam insulation in Europe. The role specifically focuses on providing technical and application support in the polyurethane foam insulation space, with some possible support of PBS’s building envelop (membrane, tapes, etc.) for the region.

This Laboratory Technician role involves working semi-independently to run and maintain PBS’s Meyrin lab as well as work with a broader PBS R&D team which is not physically located at the Meyrin site to successfully execute on the business’s objectives to maintain and grow the business. The role involves working closely with the Meyrin site facilities to implement lab upgrades and operate safely as well as working with colleagues from other businesses at the site to successfully leverage technical capabilities.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Plan, perform and document physical & application property testing of polyurethane foams and building materials in support of new product/application development and customer technical service projects

    • Assist and conduct design of experiments

    • Collect and compile data, analyze the data and flag noteworthy patterns, offer interpretations, draw conclusions and make recommendations

    • Generate data summaries/reports in Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint

  • Safely prepare samples of spray polyurethane cans (blending and filling of chemical components and pressurized gases into aerosol cans) for R&D trials, plant and customer qualification

  • Assist and conduct product demonstration and trials at customer across Europe

  • Collaborate with the formulation and application R&D teams in our US on product development and troubleshooting

  • Setup and implement new equipment and test methods for testing building products

  • Maintain the laboratory by ordering supplies, labeling chemicals, safe storage of chemicals, waste disposal, liaise with suppliers and stock replenishment, sample shipping, and keeping a safe and organized work area.

External Focus:

Expect to spend 10% of time external to the company engaging with customers and contract manufacturers.

Qualifications:

  • Swiss lab technician apprenticeship or equivalent as minimum education

  • Demonstrated understanding of the scientific method.

  • Ability to effectively work across job levels, job families, and various personality types (internally and externally) is essential to achieving goal expectations for this role; demonstrated ability to develop an effective working network.

  • Must have strong multi-tasking, time management and organization skills.

  • Fluency in English language

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, material sciences or related field desirable otherwise equivalent curriculum/technical background
