Job Responsibilities

The Lead Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the team carrying out mechanical analysis, design, parts integration, and test activities. The knowledge should include design and simulations of sub-systems assembly for different verticals, environmental analysis, motion systems and design for manufacturing. The tasks include working closely with other Line Managers and Project Managers in order to assist in project planning, scheduling, and risk assessment activities with clear responsibilities and impact on the project’s results.

The person in this role is asked to lead a dynamic group of mechanical engineers supporting them in projects from initial requirements through design and implementation to testing and delivery. A major role for the Lead Mechanical Engineer is to plan and implement a continuous learning for his team, paying special attention to new technological topics, part of the Viasat Roadmap but not necessarily already tackled in ongoing projects. The Lead Mechanical Engineer should be a proven leader, capable of understanding, motivating and supporting the team while influencing and collaborating with other globally distributed teams across the organization. The selected candidate will champion the Viasat culture and values creating and promoting an inclusive and collaborative environment within own team and across the organization.

Requirements
  • BS/MSc in Mechanical Engineering
  • 7+ year’s in Mechanical Engineering
  • 5+ years proven experience in leading a small group in an international environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, and written, and oral communication skills
  • Good experience with static and dynamic design and analysis of mechanical systems, equipment, and packages
  • Experience with low and high volume manufacturing processes
  • Experience in system-level architecture that may include aspects of mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines
  • Strong documentation skills and an ability to report on technical solutions and findings
  • Design for Test (DFT) and Design for Manufacture (DFM) methodologies and techniques
  • Familiarity with product certification, regulatory compliance and volume manufacturing
  • Hands-on, familiar with test equipment, and lab assembly
  • Ability to understand end-to-end systems and solve issues.
  • Analytical skills and interest, able and inclined to learn new diverse material at a fast pace
Preferences
  • Experience of design and qualification for harsh/rugged environments (e.g. airborne)
  • Experience with motion systems and components such as motors, drivetrains, gearboxes, and control systems
  • Agile (Configuration Management Database)
