to head the Editorial Office of IJPH and PHR with support of an assistant and temporary interns.

You will support the co-editors-in-chief of the two journals in overseeing the editorial workflows, including the peer review process, editorial board management and the collaboration with the publisher. You will collaborate with the publisher to optimize technical workflows and the journals’ websites, and with the owner in the area of finances. You will support the two strategic Editorial Boards in the development of the journals. Your role ensures that we can do all this on a large scale while maintaining an excellent level of quality content and service to authors, reviewers and editors.

Your Responsibilities Are
  • Coordinating and optimizing operational team work and processes related to the scientific editing of the journals
  • Managing and optimizing the peer review workflows in close collaboration with the publisher and editors-in-chief (error detection, development and improvement of SOP’s)
  • Managing calls for papers and special issues with editors
  • Resolving pre- and post-publication issues raised by the publisher (e.g. authorship, ethics and consent, misconduct), including communication with authors and other stakeholders
  • Supporting the editors-in-chief and the Editorial Boards in strategic projects and decisions by monitoring journal performance – also in comparison with leading competitors - by data and literature analyses
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with editors and the Editorial Board, including arranging and holding in-person meetings and editorial board meetings, and supporting initiatives to further improve engagement
  • Organizing and preparing the contents of meetings and follow up on them (e.g. editorial board meetings, meetings with regional editors, publisher)
  • Further developing needs-based editorial policies (governance, peer review policy, etc.)
  • Supporting SSPH+ and editors-in-chief in competitive adjustments of the business model in the highly dynamic field of scientific communication
  • Managing recruitment and training of new editors where required
  • Managing and acquiring APC funds for authors from low income countries
  • Supervising PhD training project “Young Researcher Editorial”
  • Representing the journals at international/national conferences and institutional visits as required
  • Proposing and signing-off social media and marketing content
Your Profile
  • PhD level research experience (health, natural or social sciences)
  • Solid experience with scientific publishing as an author; editorial experience would be an asset
  • Thorough knowledge of the scientific community and its needs
  • Excellent organization skills; strong workload management, strong n fully digital administration and organization
  • Ability to multi-task at the interface of the key constituencies (Editorial Boards, Editors-in-Chief, owner, publisher)
  • Excellent outcome-oriented communication skills with digital and personal approaches
  • Service oriented, highly supportive attitude towards clients (authors, reviewers, editors)
  • Good understanding of publishing ethics and integrity issues
  • Sound knowledge and interest in public health sciences in general
  • Interest in new developments, technologies and softwares in the field of scientific publishing
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken)
  • Highly self-motivated, resourceful and achievement-oriented
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Adaptable and flexible
