Position Summary

This internship is an exciting opportunity based at Alexion’s Zurich office providing operational support to the global medical affairs team for the implementation of Medical Affairs activities within the Neurology TA in the International region (EU, Canada, Australia, LATAM) and Japan. As a result of the internship the individual will gain first experience in Medical Affairs and understand the orphan drug lifecycle. This role will report into the Sr Medical Director, Global Medical Affairs, Neurology (International Region + Japan).

The intern will be an integral part of the Global Medical Affairs team and will work in close collaboration with the members of the team in order to achieve the learning objectives and deliverables, with a focus on the International region and Japan. The individual will contribute to the efficient and effective functioning of this dynamic team and will be expected to apply organizational, analytical skills to both day-to-day operations and innovative medical projects.

  • As a result of the internship, the individual will have a first experience in the Medical Affairs function and understand the rare disease therapeutic landscape.

Specific Learning Objectives

  • Understand the development and commercialization of drugs for rare diseases
  • Learn how to implement and execute Medical Affairs activities such as medical education, advise seeking, scientific communication and evidence generation
  • Learn how to partner and work effectively with other functions such as marketing, sales, market access and clinical operations
  • Gain an understanding of new data-generation sources and the ability to interpret this information alongside internal partners
  • Develop scientific knowledge and how to combine it with a strong business acumen
  • Gain work experience in Medical Affairs and develop the skills and capabilities useful for to work in a medical function in the Pharmaceutical Industry

Principal Responsibilities

  • Participate in the organization of medical education events and advisory boards
  • Support the development and submission of abstracts, posters and variety of other scientific communication activities
  • Support the development and execution of evidence generation activities
  • Prepare, dispatch and process contracts for medical engagements and sponsorships while managing the approval processes in accordance with internal regulations
  • Take part in Medical and Cross-Functional team meetings within International as well as Global Medical Affairs
  • Track and support the flawless execution of Medical Plans
  • Collaborate and participate in training programs for the Medical affairs teams in International
  • Review medical materials
  • Provide support to the Global Medical Director in the day-to-day business
  • Support management of vendors working on medical projects

Education/ Qualifications

  • Bachelor/Master Degree in Pharmacy, or Pharmaceutical/Life Sciences, or MD
  • Solutions oriented and ability to work in a complex environment
  • Good analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to deliver on time to agreed deadlines
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Fluency in English is required
  • Eligible to work in Switzerland
  • 12 months or less professional experience preferred
