TotalEnergies has developed a strong expertise in oil and biofuels, natural gas and electricity trading. Trading entities are based in Geneva, Paris, Houston and Singapore.

TotalEnergies installed its European trading hub across in Geneva, which now bring together very large teams around trading activities: TotalEnergies Trading & Shipping (T&S) and TotalEnergies Gas and Power (TGP).

TotalEnergies Gas and Power (TGP) is the trading arm of TotalEnergies in the field of low carbon energies (mainly gas, LNG and power). As such, it operates in fast-evolving market dynamics influenced by internal and external factors that require constant adaptation and evolution. Uncertainties specific to the trading environment (volatility of prices, supply & demand mismatches) are coupled with those coming from the broader energy sector (climate change policies, changes in the energy mix, developments of new energy sources, etc). In such context, TGP helps to ensure growth and profitability to a key segment of the business in order to reach the objective of Carbon Neutrality by 2050.

We are looking to hire an experienced risk professional to join our Middle Office team and work with GPE (Gas, Power, and Emission) desk, supporting marketing, trading, transportation, storage and other commercial activities necessary to optimize market access for the Company’s gas and power energy assets portfolio. The Operational Result of GPE desk for 2019 was circa 1 Billion dollars, which was measured and controlled by the Middle Office. The counterparties of the GPE desk includes E&P affiliates (E&P UK, E&P Norway, NLNG, …), TotalEnergies’s power producing affiliates, downstream affiliates (TotalEnergies industrial sites and gas and power marketing companies, …) and all the main Energy companies in Europe, US, Middle East and Asia and independent renewable power producers.

What you will do:

You will supervise Middle Office GPE team, and will lead the team to measure, analyse and monitor the P&L and Exposure of the Trading Desks. You will be responsible for the reporting of risks and P&L for the GPE trading desks, including Global Gas trading, Global Power trading, Power Asset desk, and Short Term Power desks. You will be responsible to develop systems, processes, and new tools to secure and optimize the process and build new reports adapted to the business evolutions. The position is based in Geneva and include oversight of both European and global energy markets.
  • Work in close cooperation with Front Office to facilitate the continuing growth of the business by providing accurate information on the potential risk impact of transactions; Develop solid risk understanding of the market structure and key commercial strategies deployed in the market; Leading effective risk analysis that support informed commercial decision making;
  • Direct supervision of risk control analysts in Middle Office GPE team; overall management of Middle Office GPE staffing resources and team activities as well as conduct performance appraisals for all direct reports;
  • Work closely with Back Office, Finance, Credit, Legal, and Internal Control to ensure that the risk control practices and policy/limit are in alignment from a compliance point of view; Partner with other leaders to drive necessary operations excellence improvements. Liaise with Trading Systems to ensure the enhancement of the trading software to meet business needs;
  • Monitor internal limits for Front Office business and ensure limits are followed, complied with, and properly documented; Analyze non-standard transaction requests and/or advise senior management of such approvals.
  • Develop and implement Middle Office risk policies, procedures and initiatives to managing continuing growth of the business; Identify new solutions aimed at improving processes and controls to eliminate identified risks or gaps; Ensure that all risk controls and reporting required by energy regulations are performed.
  • Act as the primary liaison for all trading enquiries; Provide help to the traders to model complex trades in the BOOK for the risk to be managed; Support team reporting needs and ensure reporting is complete and follow up are documented.
  • Lead Middle Office team to conduct accurate and independent analysis, valuation, and reporting of risk positions and trading results on a daily basis while ensuring compliance with all trading limits: ensure processes, procedures, limits are in place that evolve with the business; Responsible for the reporting of trading results and positions to senior management.
  • Observe & report operational risk incidents including near miss & failure events; Challenge employees to self-monitor and reflect on latent conditions that engender error
  • As part of Global Risk Control team, work in close cooperation with MO teams in Houston and Singapore; provide support to TGP global control management, processes, and procedures.
  • Act as a product owner for the development of our in-house risk systems, collaborate with IT teams to make sure Middle office’s tools are kept up to date with changes in the business.

Context and environment

  • Fast-paced, dynamic trading environment with time-sensitive, business critical activities requiring instantaneous analyses and generation of reports.
  • The Middle Supervisor is part of the Global Risk Control team involving Houston, Geneva, and Singapore.
  • The Middle Supervisor works closely with Front Office, Operations, Back Office, Finance, Compliance, and Trading System teams. The team works across locations and product types including natural gas, NGL, LPG, shale gas, LNG, power, emissions, and dry bulk products.
  • The Middle Office is responsible for calculating profits and losses and for monitoring the risks of the trading department. It is responsible for all aspects of market risk control, such as risk identification, measurement, monitoring and disclosure across various classes of energy commodity assets.
  • The Top Management of GRP branch follows and controls the trading activity through the Middle Office reports.

Candidate profile

  • Master’s degree in accounting, finance, mathematics, or business-related major;
  • Strong understanding of the energy industry, commodity trading, risk analysis, and modern finance;
  • Comprehensive understanding of risk management methodologies and valuation models;
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in mid-office commodity trading organization or on a commodity trading team; Prior supervisory experience preferred;
  • Being fluent in English is essential for this position. Sound verbal and written communication with great ability to convince in English is required.
  • Good programming skills (Python or VBA).
  • High levels of numeracy and computer literacy.
  • High degree of accuracy and efficiency under set deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • High levels of flexibility with regard working hours.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
