Why we are recruiting

The World Economic Forum’s Centre for the New Economy and Society is the global platform for shaping prosperous, inclusive and equitable economies and societies that create opportunity for all. It provides leaders with an integrated hub to understand emerging socio-economic trends and to shape the future through new policies, practices and coalitions. It accelerates impact on four interconnected Missions: 1) Economic Growth, Revival and Transformation; 2) Work, Wages and Job Creation; 3) Education, Skills and Learning; and 4) Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice.

Business, government and civil society executives work with the Centre for the New Economy and Society to access and co-create the latest insights, to develop action frameworks and to lead change through multi-stakeholder initiatives that address some of the most complex challenges and opportunities within the Centre’s four thematic Mission areas. To meet increased demand for engagement in the context of shaping the COVID recovery, the Centre is recruiting.

Among these roles, the Mission Leads, Insight Products will specialize in managing thought leadership activities within one of the thematic Missions of the Centre. Candidates are requested to indicate interest in one or several thematic Mission areas, with final assignment flexible based on the expertise and profile of the right candidate.

Reporting lines and interactions

The Centre is organized as a matrix between horizontal functional practices: 1) Action Initiatives, 2) Insight Products; 3) Programming and Communications, and 4) Community Engagement and four thematic Missions: 1) Economic Growth, Revival and Transformation; 2) Work, Wages and Job Creation; 3) Education, Skills and Learning; and 4) Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice.

The Mission Lead, Insight Products will work within one of these four thematic Missions, based on their expertise, skillset and interests, and will lead or co-lead a portfolio of thought leadership activities within that mission, aligning closely across the Insight Products functional practice. For example, the Centre’s work includes a range of major annual flagship reports (e.g., Global Competitiveness Report, Global Gender Gap Report, Global Risks Report, Global Social Mobility Report, Future of Jobs Report), thematic surveys, white papers and toolkits (e.g., Chief Economists Outlook; Global Skills Taxonomy; and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion 4.0 Toolkit) and associated leadership, expert and practitioner communities.

The Mission Lead, Insight Products will work within the Centre’s matrix structure, reporting to the Head of their corresponding thematic Mission, with guidance from the relevant functional practice Head. The Lead may supervise one or several Mission Specialist(s) or external collaborators on a project-specific basis and will work closely with other staff across the Centre and the organization to deliver outcomes efficiently.

Main responsibilities:

  • Manage key parts of the Mission activity portfolio, drawing upon relevant insight-related functional impact tools and templates to meet ambitious targets for insight-based impact and engagement from the public and the world’s leading business, government, academic and civil society stakeholders

  • Work in close alignment and collaboration with their Mission team, corresponding functional teams, and other colleagues across the Centre to co-design the overall Mission objectives and to ensure seamless internal and external engagement with the Mission

  • Develop and curate Mission-aligned insight project communities related to the Lead’s thematic portfolio of work, initiating, expanding, and maintaining relationships with diverse stakeholders.

  • Support the integration of relevant Forum members and partners into the Lead’s thematic portfolio of work, creating efficient pathways for stakeholders to engage and ensuring the community derives value.

  • Ensure implementation of harmonized approaches and methods across the Lead’s thematic portfolio of work and supporting continuous improvement and iteration.

  • Keep a consistent focus on ambitious impact and engagement outcomes. Track and report quantitative and qualitative metrics for systems-change impact across the Mission and within the Lead’s activity portfolio.

  • Represent the Centre for the New Economy and Society internally across the organization and externally as required.

  • Support the Head of Mission and Head of relevant functional practice on Centre-wide planning and coordination, support Centre-wide communication flow and delivery against the Centre’s strategy and objectives, and, as applicable, responsibly manage financial and human resources within the matrix structure.

  • Support onboarding and guidance of new colleagues and understand and role model a supportive, ambitious and collaborative team culture.

The successful candidate will be assessed on

  • Formulating strategies and workplans for activities within their thematic portfolio of work in alignment with the mission team and corresponding functional practice(s), integrating multiple views and evolving and innovating within a rapidly shifting context.

  • Agile coordination and management of insight methodologies, benchmarking frameworks, and data-based narratives within their thematic portfolio of work in alignment with the mission team and corresponding functional practice(s).

  • Outstanding writing and editorial skills; analyzing and synthesizing quantitative and qualitative data in support of insight development; data visualization.

  • Developing, managing and coordinating strategic partnerships with external partners on insights-based engagement.

  • Ability to engage with senior stakeholders and disseminate key narratives within the context of the Lead’s thematic portfolio, the broader Mission, and the Centre as a whole.

  • Focused approach to applied research, analyzing, synthesizing and leveraging quantitative and qualitative data in support of the Mission and associated activities, and deploying the full power of the Forum platform including events and programming, public engagement and digital tools.

  • Ability to collaborate efficiently and transparently within the team as a strong team player and in an agile matrix organization. As applicable, supervising and coaching Specialist(s) across relevant functional competences and thematic content.

  • Ensuring that results and milestones are documented consistently and regularly shared with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Fluency in the use of internal and external digital platforms and tools for activity design, project management and constituent engagement.

  • Keeping abreast of relevant issues, developments, initiatives and stakeholders pertinent to the Centre’s broader remit and objectives, as well as specifically within the thematic Mission corresponding to their activity portfolio.

  • Developing and role-modelling a strong understanding of the Centre’s mission and culture within the broader Forum context.

Requirements and preferred experience

  • Advanced university degree in public policy, economics, data science, business, journalism, communications, or other relevant fields, including substantive knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies.

  • 8+ years of relevant professional experience, ideally across business, government, non-profit, international organization and/or think tanks.

  • Proven track record in the drafting and production of institutional insight products and thought leadership pieces, with a view to readability and application; dedication to interdisciplinary approaches.

  • Track record and interest in using insights to drive impact and systems change in one or several of the areas covered by the Centre’s Missions an advantage .

  • Proven excellent project management and coordination skills; attention to detail; capacity to apply critical thinking, synthesize various viewpoints, consult broadly, work collaboratively in a multicultural team, and manage both long- and short-term objectives in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

  • Excellent teamwork, collaboration and operational management skills.

  • Fluency in English, with excellent written, digital and verbal communication skills; data fluency; knowledge of other languages would be an asset.
