About Global Technology Infrastructure Services

GTIS is responsible for the design, build and operation of all the IT infrastructure necessary to support the business. This includes various services such as datacentres, cloud platforms, servers, databases, storage, connectivity and desktop support.

About Switzerland Connectivity Support
The connectivity team in Switzerland is a small team of four providing in-country 2nd line operational support and development of local network, telephony and datacentre technologies. This includes various services such as Routing and Switching, Firewalls, Load Balancers, Audio Visual, Wireless, IP telephony, Remote VPN and datacentre racking and cabling services.

Overall purpose of role

We are seeking a network engineer to work as part of this team, based in Geneva, Switzerland. Your primary role will be to provide quality support and analytical skills for our Swiss offices and datacentres.


Key Accountabilities

As with all large, multiple site, multi-protocol networking environments, problems and changes occur. The primary function of the role will be to identify, determine and resolve these issues on an as-required basis. In addition to these abilities, the role will have:

The capability to identify and resolve possible network affecting situations, faulty hardware or logical problems.


Have the ability to access any existing network device and review / amend as required in a controlled manner.


Be capable of liaising with other technology, business areas and 3rd party vendors in pursuit of resolving the problem or communicating progress.


Assist onsite from time to time at our datacentres and branches when projects or support requirements arise


Perform regular changes in response to requests and implement them according to corporate standards and under the appropriate authorisation


Work with colleagues to deliver on major global initiatives, raising the appropriate change control documentation and seeking to minimise the business impact of changes.


Perform general housekeeping duties primarily from global management scripts and help with management reporting


Stakeholder Management and Leadership


You will be working in the Geneva Connectivity team, reporting to the network manager. On a daily basis you will be responding to business requests for minor changes to the network and firewall configuration or reacting to incidents. As part of Global Technology Infrastructure Services, you will work with colleagues supporting other related infrastructure technologies or with IT developers and project managers in the wider Technology group.


Decision-making and Problem Solving


You must be able to accurately assess problems based on your technical knowledge and agree the most appropriate solutions with colleagues. This may involve finding a rapid solution to a problem, or developing and executing on a longer term strategy in coordination with other technical teams.


Risk and Control Objective

Ensure that all activities and duties are carried out in full compliance with regulatory requirements, Enterprise Wide Risk Management Framework and internal Barclays Policies and Policy Standards.


Person Specification

We are looking for a team player who is consiencious and brings a can-do attitude. You must be able to discuss technical matters with global colleagues and be able to quickly solve problems and assimilate new technologies. This role requires participation in an on-call rota and/or weekend or evening working, so a willingness to accommodate this and on occasion to work flexibly is required.


Essential Skills/Basic Qualifications:

Hands-On Cisco Core networking skills, covering datacentre switching and routing, branch connectivity, wireless, VPN remote access and routing

  • Firewalling and awareness of related security technologies
  • Experience of load-balancer configuration and the workings of related web applications and protocols
  • Enterprise Management platforms and experience of working in an ITIL or equivalent environment

Desirable skills/Preferred Qualifications:

  • Educated to degree level and/or having industry qualifications such as CCNP
  • Working knowledge of Voice/VoIP technologies
  • Fluent English speaker
