PhD in real-time bioaerosol monitoring

Your mission :
The Extreme Environments Research Laboratory (EERL) is looking for a PhD student for a collaborative project with the Federal Institute of Metrology METAS in Bern. The project will allow you to develop a reference method for bioaerosol monitoring. You will be given challenging duties at the fascinating interface between research, the economy, society and developments in metrology. A friendly working environment and lots of creative freedom await you. You will be based in Bern and Sion.

The EERL focuses on understanding natural and anthropogenic atmospheric processes, as well as exchange processes between the atmosphere and cryosphere, ocean and (inhabited) land that have climate impact and are impacted by climate. EERL forms part of EPFL’s new Alpine and Polar Environments Research Centre (ALPOLE) in Sion.
The Federal Institute of Metrology METAS develops internationally recognised reference units with the required level of accuracy for economists, researchers and the federal administration. It relies on state-of-the-art infrastructure for the calibration and compliance auditing of measuring instruments in accordance with an internationally recognised quality standard.

For the application, please submit a motivation letter including your interests and qualifications, a CV and publication list, the latter if applicable. Dr Konstantina Vasilatou, laboratory manager (konstantina.vasilatou@metas.ch) or Ms Denise Malnati, Deputy HR Manager (+41 58 387 01 11), will be happy to provide you with more information. We look forward to receiving your complete application. By applying online at METAS, you will make it easier for us to process your application. (METAS)

Please also ensure to submit an application to the Doctoral Program in Civil and Environmental Engineering (EDCE). The submission deadline for this post is 1 December 2021. Please note, Phd positions are awarded initially for one year. After one year of successful probation, the initial contract can be extended up to a total of four years.

Main duties and responsibilities include :
  • In the context of a doctoral thesis, you will be responsible for the targeted further development of aerosol generators and for the physical and chemical characterisation of the aerosols generated
  • You will also be responsible for setting up new measuring systems and further developing reference methods for the calibration of bioaerosol monitors
  • You will ensure international acceptance of the new measuring options by participating in measurement comparisons and field campaigns and by publishing the results
  • Teaching assistantship
  • Part-time supervision of MSc students
Your profile :
  • You have graduated from a higher education institution at MSc level in the field of environmental sciences, physics or chemistry, and have already gained some initial experience with aerosol measuring technology
  • Operating complex equipment and simulating and analysing experiments is right up your alley
  • You are enthusiastic about interdisciplinary issues and have practical skills coupled with the required amount of pragmatism
  • You have a very good grasp of English and a good grasp of German and/or French/Italian
  • Thanks to your open-minded, flexible and team-oriented nature, you quickly adapt to new challenges
  • You are willing to work at both METAS in Bern and EPFL in Sion/Lausanne
We offer :
  • A dynamic, interdisciplinary and young research group.
  • A vibrant, internationally visible and rising academic institution in alpine and polar environments research.
  • A great working atmosphere and ample opportunities for professional and personal development with access to many continuing education courses.
