for the Small Arms Survey


TYPE OF CONTRACT: staff or consultant contract (starting as soon as possible, up to the end of the project’s phase 2 in late 2024)

General description of the position


The Small Arms Survey — a global centre of excellence whose mandate is to generate evidence-based, impartial, and policy-relevant knowledge on all aspects of small arms and armed violence — is seeking a project officer to support implementation of phase 2 of the European Union (EU)–League of Arab States (LAS) Project on illicit small arms (2021-24). EU Council Decision. The successful candidate will be recruited as a Geneva-based staff member or as a consultant based in his/her country of residence.


Mission and activities

  • Support the implementation of EU-LAS project activities.
  • Coordinate, and provide quality assurance for, the translation into Arabic of English-language documents and publications on small arms and armed violence.
  • Provide Arabic/English interpretation in project-related meetings and discussions.
  • Help plan and organize project events, including associated travel (e.g. training events and regional meetings).
  • Assist with project outreach vis-à-vis LAS countries, as well as representatives of the EU, the LAS Secretariat, INTERPOL, the World Customs Organization, and other partners.
  • As needed, represent the Small Arms Survey in project-related meetings.
  • As needed, assist with the financial management of the project (e.g., preparing payment requests in line with Survey policies and procedures).
  • As requested, provide other assistance to the Project Coordinator and the Project Officer-Management in support of the project.

Candidate’s profile

  • At least three years of professional experience that includes project implementation and event organization; experience implementing EU-funded projects, an asset
  • Professional experience in translation and publications management (Arabic/English publications)
  • University degree in international relations, political science, conflict or security studies, or other related areas
  • Knowledge of conventional arms control, counter-terrorism, counter-trafficking, small arms and light weapons, and/or security issues affecting Arab states, an asset
  • Experience working with governments and multilateral organizations on projects relating to the m Region, international security, and/or arms control, an asset
  • Excellent Arabic and English, both spoken and written; spoken and written French an asset
  • Strong communication, presentation, and writing skills
  • Computer literate (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Ability to work effectively, as part of a team, in a multicultural and multilingual environment; good interpersonal skills
  • Good organizational skills; ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to fulfil assigned tasks within demanding timeframes
  • Ability to travel, as needed, to the Arab Region and Europe
