The overarching goal of the Neural Signaling Section is to move forward drug discovery projects, from target assessment to early clinical phase, in the therapeutic area of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease and related disorders.Job missionWe are looking for an individual with high interest and determination to improve the lives of patients suffering from devastating neurodegenerative disorders. You will contribute to the identification and optimization of drug candidates from different modalities (small and large molecules, oligonucleotides, gene therapy, etc.) by assessing their potential in cell culture models and characterizing the mechanism and mode of actions. You will be involved in exploratory research to find new targets and perform proof-of-concept studies to validate novel targets. You will be part of an existing research lab and have the full opportunity to work in close collaboration with multidisciplinary experts to reach all together our goal to provide patients with innovative, safe and life changing treatments.Your impact /responsibilities- Maintaining cell culture and pluripotent stem cell models of human neurological disorders
- Planning and performing cellular assays by employing live-cell high-content imaging, microscopy of subcellular structures
- Performing biochemical and gene expression experiments for target identification and orthogonal data generation and validation
- Analyzing, documenting and presenting the data to the lab, project teams and the NRD Research Department
- Coordinating and leading externalization of certain experimental processes and enabling the return of data and results
- Gaining an opportunity to become a matrix leader to lead and coordinate experimental processes in collaboration across the organization and with external collaborations
- By consulting literature or public resources, proposing assay optimization and independently developing assays and technology for the success of the lab and NRD portfolio
- Contributing to discussions evaluating the data in the context of understanding disease biology and/or therapeutic impact
- Working closely with all members of the group, sharing duties in lab organizational activities, maintaining a clean work environment, and actively contributing to the positive and collaborative work atmosphere within the group and beyond in the matrix structure of our drug discovery and research organization
- MSc/BSc in Life Sciences (cellular/ molecular biology, pharmacology, neuroscience), or completion of an apprenticeship for a biology research associate (“Lehrabschluss”) with ≥3 years industry experience in neuroscience or cellular biology (PhD holders won’t be considered for this position)
- Proficient in cell culture and sterile working techniques.
- Hands-on experience with iPSC-derived cells such as neurons and/or microglia
- Experience in biochemical and immunoassays such as cell extraction, Western blot, ELISA, immunoprecipitation, immunocyto & histochemistry and gene expression analysis by RT-PCR
- Rodent brain tissue sectioning (vibrotome sectioning) and imaging with confocal microscope
- Experience with imaging on high-content microscopes is advantageous
- Digitally savvy with a strong sense and proficiency in generating FAIR data
- Strong willingness to continuously learn and grow in your capabilities
- Skillfully able to interact effectively with people, strong commitment to teamwork with a flexible mindset to an agile and highly collaborative environment with fast-paced project work
- You can communicate, write and present fluently in English
- Excellent data management and record-keeping skills
- Experience with basic animal handling and dissections & LTK1 certification or equivalent
- Experience with multiplex or high-end omics instruments is a plus
- Experience in automated image analysis with simple programming skills and an understanding of statistical concepts
- Experienced in biosafety and general safety, health and environment lab topics
