Research Scientist (80-100%)

to work in our Zurich-based R&D lab in Schlieren, Switzerland

We are shooting for the moon and work on a novel breath test to detect respiratory infections at the point-of-need, where patients need it most. Our test will help to capture infections early to save lives, keep patients out of the hospital and facilitate a targeted use of drugs. Your Responsibilities

As a Research Scientist, you will support and lead assay development for our novel breath test. This involves extensive hands-on laboratory work as well as creative experimental approaches including prototyping. You will be tasked to:

  • Own and lead various aspects of the design, development, improvement, and evaluation of our diagnostic breath devices, including experimental plan development as well as support of other scientists in the lab
  • Plan, execute, analyze, and troubleshoot laboratory R&D experiments to advance our breath technology in combination with nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs)
  • Perform verification and validation of diagnostic platform concepts using contrived and clinical samples. This includes evaluations in the lab and in clinical studies
  • Support external partner interfaces in co-development or productization/design for manufacturing
  • Manage, analyze, and communicate results to your team and stakeholders within the organization
  • Help building our quality management system
  • Consistently maintain a safe working environment with good housekeeping practices.
  • Utilize clinical samples to validate concepts or assay performance
  • Assume different roles and grow into new technical areas as needed
  • Work competently in a project management, milestone-driven environment

Your Profile

To enjoy and succeed in your role, you should bring:

  • BSc or MSc level in a life science-related field
  • 2+ years of relevant experience with assay development with focus on PCR or isothermal NAAT
  • Experience with in-vitro diagnostic products, or similar, is a strong plus, yet we consider a recent graduate if there is relevant hands-on experience
  • Skilled in coherent experimental design and execution, with strong, practical laboratory skills, and excited about performing hands-on scientific work
  • Experience with experimental data analysis, biostatistics, and presentation of results in various formats
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across multiple disciplines such as biology, engineering, and manufacturing is desirable
  • Highly proactive and self-directed with strong scientific integrity and willingness to always question results, including your own
  • Hands-on team player with strong “can do”, analysis and problem-solving skills who likes to tackle challenges, improve own skills, and help shape Avelo’s future
  • Proficient written and oral communication skills in English, fluency in German is a plus
  • Applicants must be either Swiss citizens, EU nationals or have the legal right to live and work in Switzerland
