6500! That’s the number of associates in the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR). This division is the innovation engine of Novartis, focusing on powerful new technologies that have the potential to help produce therapeutic breakthroughs for patients.

The Oncology department at Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR) is looking for a scientific associate with a strong background in the field of cellular and molecular biology to join their Drug Discovery Biology group located in Basel, Switzerland.

You will be part of a dynamic biology team, deeply engaged in progressing preclinical drug discovery programs. In this role, you will be accountable for generation of novel, high quality data, by using a variety of molecular and cell biology approaches. You will contribute to the biological understanding of cancer targets and the development of suitable assays, as part of the optimization and characterization process of candidate molecules of therapeutic relevance.
While closely interacting with your lab head and colleagues in the group, you will be expected to work independently and to flexibly contribute to local and global projects, while proactively sharing knowhow and experience across groups.

Major accountabilities include:
  • Independently perform and interpret experiments under the leadership of the assigned lab head
  • Closely work with multiple teams across expertise groups within Oncology (including other Drug Discovery Biology teams, Enzymology and Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Data Science), as well as across the whole NIBR organization
  • Design, interpret and consolidate/report data of the respective experiments. Quality of data generated should enable critical decisions throughout the project’s phases.
  • Be able to present own data in lab and group meetings
  • Efficiently manage and maintain a functional laboratory, technical equipment and tools
Minimum Requirements
  • Qualification as Lab Technician (apprenticeship/vocational training) or first degree (MSc, BSc) in Cellular Biology, Molecular Biology or another relevant discipline
  • Significant practical work experience in biomedical research gained in an industry or academic laboratory
  • Proficiency and hands-on experience in applying a wide range of cellular and molecular biological methods (including RNAi, CRISPR, qRT-PCR, cloning, cell culture, transient/stable cell line generation, immunoblotting, ELISA, flow cytometry)
  • Basic knowledge of cancer signaling/biology and experience with biophysical and biochemical methods for protein analysis are considered a strong advantage
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other data visualization software
  • Used to successfully work within a high productivity and quality environment
  • Proven ability to effectively collaborate in an interdisciplinary team environment
  • Highly collaborative and self-motivated team player
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Fluency in English (oral and written)
