Position: Senior Compliance Director, International

Reports to: Global Chief Compliance Officer

Location:Zug, Switzerland

Position Summary

Reporting to the Global Chief Compliance Officer, the Compliance Director International has overall responsibility for providing compliance support to international colleagues in Medical Affairs, Commercial, Supply & Distribution, Regulatory, Market Access, and Clinical.

The individual is expected to be a hands-on, business-oriented compliance partner.

Responsibilities

The Sr. Director, Compliance International will report to the Global Chief Compliance Officer and will work closely with the Head International Commercial counsel to support Apellis in various international markets, including but not limited to Europe, United Kingdom, and Australia. Specifically, the role will:
  • Serve as a business partner for Medical Affairs, Commercial, Supply & Distribution, Regulatory, Market Access, and Clinical.
  • Conduct investigations and follow-up on compliance concerns as needed.
  • Develop and conduct ex-US risk assessments and develop ex-US compliance monitoring, auditing, training & policy plan.
  • Create the monitoring and auditing program for ex-US activities, including distributor audits.
  • Improve and refine compliance operational processes.
  • As needed, provide updates on compliance risks and mitigation strategies for the Executive Committee and Board of Directors.
  • Create and implement training curricula for live and online training.
  • Conduct compliance training for employees and high-risk vendors, such as distributors, and conduct periodic monitoring of speaker programs, field rides and advisory boards.
  • Review Healthcare Professional (HCP) needs assessments, educational grant and sponsorship requests.
  • Support HCP transparency and disclosure reporting if needed.
  • Develop policies and procedures.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of and familiarity with Apellis’ business, its people, products, markets, facilities, customers and collaborate with the colleagues in the US Legal & Compliance functions.
  • Work with Legal and IT to provide privacy (e.g., GDPR) related guidance
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree & 10-12 years of directly related compliance experience
  • At least 10 years of compliance risk management experience at a global company, including high-risk markets, distributors, and due diligence processes.
  • Background knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements related to Anti-Bribery & Corruption (e.g., U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, French Sapin II Law, UK Bribery Act, EFPIA, IFPMA and local industry codes).
  • Experience and exposure working in a global setting, project management, governance, and compliance matters are preferred in pre-commercial, commercial and R&D areas.
  • Fluency of at least on other language of the European Union is a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
