The post is located in the Perception Change Project of the Office of the Director-General, United Nations at Geneva. The incumbent will report to the Director-General and to the Chef de Cabinet.

The incumbent will be responsible for driving the Perception Change Project. The Perception Change Project (PCP) is a time-bound project to improve understanding among key audiences of the real value and impact of the substance generated in “International Geneva”, change public perception about the United Nations and its partners, recalibrate policy priorities and increase resource allocation. The aim of the project is, through an incremental strategic agenda-setting and collective outreach, to create a narrative that establishes an easily understandable link between what is done by all the actors of “International Geneva” and the lives of individuals.

Responsibilities
The Head of the Perception Change Project (PCP) will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Plans and oversees the management of the Project; designs a work programme and ensures that the project’s activities are carried out in a timely fashion and in coordination with the PCP partner organizations.
  • Organizes the activities of the PCP to improve outreach on the role of International Geneva on peace, rights and well-being and the SDGs.
  • Increases public awareness of the work of the United Nations and International Geneva in Switzerland and abroad.
  • Envisions and implements creative communications products, campaigns and events for the PCP in close coordination with relevant communications teams and/or organizations. Maintains and develops existing initiatives that have proven successful. This may include and is not limited to:
  • Collective outreach initiatives (communication materials and events which help people understand the importance of the work done by the UN and International Geneva: e.g. SDG Mapping, Recipes for Peace, Rights and Well-being, 3D Map, impact infographics, Impact Stories Newsletter…)
  • Support media outreach (in close collaboration with the UN Information Service)
  • Organize and/or support high-profile meetings/events (e.g World Fairs, Book fairs, public holiday events, cultural events)
  • Manage the production of innovative graphic material (flyers, infographics, etc.)
  • Feed regularly the contents of the UN Geneva website
  • Continue implementing the youth outreach programmes to bring the UN and International Geneva closer to the youth
- Envision and implement transmedia campaigns (e.g. #YouNeedtoKnow SDG campaign with public and private partners – video – SDG Studio - branding – social media – identifying partners, etc.)
- Produce innovative tools to encourage people to take action for the SDGs (leaflets, videos, 170 actions series) - Disseminate the PCP material in multiple languages and across countries - Increase social media activities
Partnership building

  • Maintains and invigorates the PCP network of 100+ partners – e.g. PCP meet-ups, increases knowledge-sharing between partners, connects partners to boost their communications efforts
  • Strengthens innovative partnerships and collaborations with academic institutions, cultural and global sports entities. Identifies new partnerships for enhanced communications around synergies and impact. Identifies events of any magnitude to spread UN messages to specific audiences that fit the strategic objectives
  • Establishes and maintains productive partnerships with external communication, cultural and advertisement entities.
  • Explore, create, and develop pro bono partnerships with major communication companies, media, and other entities, with a view to disseminating UN messages and the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Advises on general communications for broader coherence and change management with other UNOG units (e.g. Annual Report, social media, UNOG website, Umoja, SHP)
  • Provides input for presentations, speeches related to the perception of the United Nations and partners in Geneva.
  • Makes presentations including online about the work of the PCP
  • Prepares project progress reports and updates to keep donors, partners and others informed about and engaged with the PCP.
  • Prepares fundraising material. Devises and prioritizes activities in light of available funding. In close collaboration with the Division of Administration, oversees the PCP budget.
  • Recruits new team members as required by projects subject to funding.
  • Responds to meeting requests, meets with officials, promotes, and presents the project at events.
  • Performs other related duties as required

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in international relations, communication, journalism, public relations or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

At least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in programme/project management, communication, international relations, journalism, or related area is required.

Experience in creating and managing large global communication campaigns and events benefiting sustainable development issues is required.

Proven experience in developing and managing outreach projects from scratch and in bringing people together around common goals such as the Sustainable Development Goals is required.

Managerial and supervisory experience is required.

At least 5 years of relevant experience in the United Nations or other comparable organization is desirable.

Long standing experience in communications partnerships to promote the work of the United Nations or other comparable international organizations is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English and French is required.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
