Position Summary

The CDTL is a strategic matrix leader of a cross-functional team, aligned to maximize the value of the asset and drive execution of the compound strategy throughout the lifecycle. The CDTL champions the project(s) at all levels of J&J by leading the team to develop creative strategic approaches for all aspects of development, providing clear communication, and securing appropriate resources.

Key Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To
  • Lead the development and execution of the compound development strategy for the program(s), creating a vision for each compound within the TA portfolio, including identifying precision medicine strategies and determining/sequencing indications to be pursued.
  • Lead the Compound Development Team (CDT) with representation from appropriate functional partners, to create a compound development plan that provides a thorough and clear asset strategy by:
  • Integrating input from all functional areas to identify key development issues and the strategic approach to each, with associated timelines and budgets, and providing clarity on alternative pathways and tradeoffs considered.
  • Creating the target product profile in collaboration with commercial, market access, medical affairs, regulatory, biomarkers and clinical groups, and adjusting this profile as new information and insights are gained.
  • Driving decision-making for compound lifecycle strategy, ensuring relevant research, analysis, competitive data, and expertise are taken into account.
  • Leading discussions at the CDT to reach decisions, including making final decisions when full consensus cannot be reached.
  • Challenging functional representatives to ensure that all issues and questions are being addressed, and that functional area input into the strategy is adequate to meet the needs of the compound.
  • Managing the complexity of internal/external development and commercial activities and proactively identifying issues and risks while leading contingency planning and problem solving.
  • Ensuring development and implementation of optimal IP, medical affairs, publication and regulatory strategies to protect and maximize asset value.
  • Collaborating closely with the PML on the asset to identify and plan fit-for-purpose resources (FTEs and budget) to support the program.
  • Ensuring adequate project resource utilization and budget management, providing clarity and transparency on changes and potential tradeoffs.
  • Mentoring and coaching assigned team members to lead sub-teams and other Development Programs as required.
  • Ensuring team alignment with functional leadership and executing on feedback with regard to Go/No Go decisions, timelines, key activities, resource allocations and budgets, valuations and prioritization.
  • Driving strategic alignment for development, medical affairs, commercial, pricing & market access plans.
  • Presenting strategic options and leading phase transition proposals at governance boards.
  • Maintaining a focus on pipeline value rather than single project value and balancing the role as team leader with a commitment to maximizing portfolio value by supporting Go decisions and appropriately arriving at No Go decisions.
  • Playing an active role as a member of the CDTL community to help lead and devise strategies for key strategic initiatives and talent development across the Portfolio.
  • Representing the CDT on various cross functional committees.
  • Leading cross functional/therapeutic area/company initiatives outside of assigned CDT.
  • Participating in portfolio/strategy committees within the DAS/TA.

Qualifications
  • Advanced Degree (Ph.D., M.D., Pharm.D.,MBA) is required
  • A minimum of 10 years of pharmaceutical industry experience
  • Experience in a leadership role as part of a research-driven pharmaceutical company
  • Experience in cross-functional team leadership, including strategy development and driving tactical delivery of programs
  • Strong conflict resolution skills, including influencing without reporting authority and negotiation
  • Outstanding leadership, collaboration and communication skills
  • Experience with drug development in Neuroscience related areas is preferred
  • Alliance management experience is preferred
  • Ability to develop a deep understanding of the unmet need potentially addressed by the asset; scientific/disease area expertise, and current innovative therapeutic development paradigms (e.g. healthcare trends, relevant devices, biomarkers, diagnostics)
  • Ability to integrate all cross functional disciplines into a successful strategy
  • Tenacious problem-solving skills for developing creative solutions and meeting project objectives
  • Ability to identify and interact with all stakeholders, including at the most senior levels in the organization
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking and contingency planning
  • Deep understanding of requirements for successful commercialization of a new product, including competitive and payer landscape across different geographies and pricing strategies
  • Strategic Agility: Understanding big picture for compound and Janssen portfolio, translating scientific and business concepts into short and long-term deliverables, managing ambiguity and making decisions with incomplete data
  • Up to 25% travel (international and domestic) may be required
