The Senior Director EMEA R&D Packaging is accountable for delivering, maintaining, evolving packaging solutions and innovations for new products and base business, manage cost savings, and drive the sustainability agenda to meet JNJ sustainability goals, while keeping a consumer centricity vision.

The role will be responsible for providing leadership in global and regional packaging initiatives, for the management and development of a geographically dispersed team of Packaging engineers and technicians. The Senior Director EMEA R&D Packaging will collaborate and work with cross-functional and cross-regional peers to provide strategic direction towards project goals based on sound technical assessment and rationale.

The role is to collaborate closely with Sr. Leaders; close partnerships with Product Development, Supply Chain, Quality, Regulatory Affairs and Marketing will be essential.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, recruit and manage the EMEA R&D Packaging Teams, and build an effective Organization. Drive and implement talent strategies to attract, retain and develop talent incl. hiring, career progression, pay equity, recognition, performance management, talent and career development and other people-related decisions. Foster a culture of ONE team, trust and agility
  • Develop strategic technical direction and roadmap for Packaging innovations and improvements, and Sustainability projects. Link technical knowledge to business strategy. Set the R&D packaging & sustainability strategy for short & long term, which is consumer centric, sustainable, high quality and compliant. Keep updated on industry trends & technologies, external focus and close partnership with suppliers.
  • Work closely with commercial and cross functional leaders to ensure alignment and prioritization around Innovation strategy, portfolio management, resources and budgets.
  • Lead role in R&D for technical problem resolution, demonstrate superior understanding of packaging and packing technologies and process, keeping consumer insights at the center.
  • Understand the research landscape and leverages internal and external network to access new and emerging scientific technologies, that enable a fast and agile go to market model. Anticipate competitor activities, regulatory developments, sustainability trends to ensure that pipeline and portfolio are robust and competitive in terms of performance, claims and cost, which meets the requirement of the business and consumer needs
  • Develop technology transfer processes for new Packaging introductions in close collaboration with Manufacturing, R&D and Supply Chain
  • Manage full budget of Packaging EMEA R&D department
  • Ensure all processes and activities are compliant with company policies and applicable external regulations/laws. Provide and nurture the highest standards of professionalism, ethics, and compliance.
  • Drive broad scope of projects with cross-functional and cross-regional involvement.
  • Influencing function resource and budget allocation.
  • Provide project/program progress reports and status updates to senior management.
  • Establish project technical success criteria and monitor progress.
  • Communicate across the Packaging organization to ensure alignment within the department and with business strategy
  • Integral member of EMEA R&D leadership team and contribute for the ONE team EMEA mindset
  • Member of Global Sustainability Leadership team.
  • Manage R&D Packaging budget and capital & resource allocation to meet business needs

Qualifications
  • BSc/ Master’s degree in engineering or Science (Pharmacology/Chemistry preferred) is required
  • A minimum of 12 years of experience in Packaging Development
  • A minimum of 10 years of people management experience is required
  • Consumer Good Companies related Industry experience is preferred

Key Working Relationships

Internal: This role will need strong technical expertise, knowledge of complex matrix organizations and strong communication/ influencing skills as will be key point of contact for all business & R&D partners at global and regional level. Strong external networking (eg: suppliers, inventors, packaging associations).
