Position Description

The Sr. Manager EHS, Material Handling & Ergonomics is an experienced and recognized technical expert in the prevention of injuries and property loss associated with a wide variety of safety hazards. As a global subject matter expert s/he will develop and implement Company safety strategies in the area of Material Handling, Warehouse, Dock, Racking, Powered Industrial Vehicle (PIV), Load Securing, Transport, Dangerous Goods and Ergonomics. The complexity of safety challenges across the Company and Strategic Partners requires advanced knowledge and technical specialization in the different areas of occupational safety for manufacturing, warehouses, laboratories, office buildings, facilities, construction projects and EHS innovations.
  • The Sr. Manager EHS, Material Handling & Ergonomics must work with staff in all parts of our business and in all cultures to implement effective solutions.
  • Manages 1 Global Manager level Dangerous Goods subject matter expert (SME).
  • S/he must drive a standardized and harmonized approach across the Company to maximize efficiency and effectiveness in diverse cultures and countries.
  • S/he will interface with a wide variety of operating facilities - and strategic partners personnel, ranging from maintenance and engineering technicians, local EHS staff to organizational leaders.
  • S/he will develop solutions to Material Handling, Warehouse, Dock, Racking, Powered Industrial Vehicle (PIV), Load Securing, Transport, Dangerous Goods and Ergonomics challenges and present recommendations to various leadership teams: site-level leadership teams; regional EHS Leadership Team; global EHS Leadership Team; Engineering and Facilities Leadership Teams; etc.
  • S/he will interface with local and national regulatory agencies for workplace safety and health, leaders of professional associations for EHS, External Service providers and vendors for environment, health, and safety. 

Key Responsibilities
  • Develops implements and continuously improves worldwide occupational safety strategies, tactics and programs’ and leads EHS innovations.
  • Provides technical solutions to the Company on cost effective compliance strategies for EHS Standards such as Material Handling, Warehouse, Dock, Racking, Powered Industrial Vehicle (PIV), Load Securing, Transport, Dangerous Goods and Ergonomics.
  • Collaborates with R&D, Operations, Engineering and Facilities organizations to incorporate safety engineering into development of standardized design platforms.
  • Lead EHS innovation with focus on associate facing technology to improve the experience as well as usability of technology in EHS programs.
  • Identify innovative solutions to drive automation, reliability, satisfaction and improve EHS performance and overall risk profile.
  • Manage the effectiveness and success of the technology programs including soliciting feedback from the user community and multiple third-party suppliers for solution development.
  • Support EHS team by navigating fast paced and sometime ambiguous technological challenges by understanding NCHC business requirements, evaluating solutions being presented, and providing input on which solution is best suited.
  • Leading technical audits and support program reviews in Material Handling, Warehouse, Dock, Racking, Powered Industrial Vehicle (PIV), Load Securing, Transport, Dangerous Goods and Ergonomics.
  • Interpreting risk assessment data against codes and standards.
  • Must be a hands-on problem solver – helping sites troubleshoot and brainstorm solutions for challenging and complex scenarios.
  • Establish risk mitigation goals and develops metrics to track & communicate progress.
  • Analyzes Material Handling, Warehouse, Dock, Racking, Powered Industrial Vehicle (PIV), Load Securing, Transport, Dangerous Goods and Ergonomics safety metrics (leading & lagging indicators) and communicates results to major internal customers including regional and sector management.
  • Partners with various System-based Owners/Process Champions to ensure that SOPs remain current and are regularly reviewed to include new requirements and/or to exclude excessive requirements.
  • Participates in accident and incident investigations to assure accurate and thorough identification of root causes and development of appropriate CAPA.
  • Develops occupational safety capabilities s/he globally owns by leading a global Community of Practice and through training, coaching and support.
  • Provides guidance and support to the regions to ensure effective implementation and adherence to the NCHC EHS Standards and Safety Culture program.
  • Supports establishment and maintenance of safety policies/standards/metrics that support strategic goals, NCHC requirements, and NCHC’s leadership position in safety.
  • Working with EHS staff, helps shape the external regulatory, industry and stakeholder environments, promoting NCHC’s leadership position in occupational safety through outreach activities including regulatory agency alliances and industry forums.
  • Maintain currency with industry best practices, Best Available Technologies (BAT), and trends. Share this knowledge with peers and leadership.

Qualifications

Position Requirements:
  • Education: University/Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, management or safety sciences
  • Years of experience: minimum 10-12 years with proven successful performance
  • Knowledge of global EHS regulations & ISO certifications, EHS Management systems and current trends in EHS Culture
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills to evaluate data and challenge results
  • Ability to influence, enabling people to drive reliable execution of safety systems, detect weak signals, question assumptions, and intervene when necessary
  • Business acumen / high level of market awareness and customer sensitivity
  • Demonstrated experience in identifying, evaluating and controlling Material Handling, Warehouse, Dock, Racking, Powered Industrial Vehicle (PIV), Load Securing, Transport, Dangerous Goods and Ergonomics safety risks in the workplace
  • Demonstrated experience in building competency and awareness of occupational safety issues through training, coaching, public speaking, and presentations to teams at all levels of the organization.
  • Outstanding leadership, ability to gain trust and influence at all levels and collaborative
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to confidently present complex information in an easily understood manner
  • Ability to work in a matrix, team-oriented environment
  • Language Requirements: English required

Preferred Requirements/Competencies
  • Advanced degree in engineering, science, management or safety sciences
  • Certifications in EHS (e.g. CSP, PE, CIH)
  • Six Sigma, FPX certification
  • Multi-site EHS experience or multi regional experience in positions of increasing responsibility
  • Experience in leading employee campaigns and initiatives, technically and digitally savvy with analytical skills
  • Experience with regional policy, procedure, program authoring, development, deployment and implementation
  • Excellent demonstrated project management skills, including ability to produce and maintain project schedules & budgets, create dashboards and track metrics, and assemble project information into clearly written reports that document findings and recommendations.
  • Evidence of recognition as a technical leader (e.g., certification, invited speaker at internal and external meetings and symposia, publications)
  • Strong compliance orientation with a focus on end-to-end global/regional EHS process management
