We empower our teams to put science into meaningful action and give our R&D colleagues the autonomy, resources and tools they need to take science a step beyond.How You Will Make An ImpactThermo Fisher Scientific in Ecublens (Switzerland) is looking for a Sr. Optical Engineer with previous experience in spectrometry to join the R&D Team in the development of our spectrometers and improvements of the products already on the market.What You Will DoDefine, design, implement, and characterize the optical detection systems as a member of multidisciplinary R&D project teams developing new analytic instruments for Bulk Elemental Analysis . Provide optical system design expertise to development teams in the following ways:
  • Specify system(s) of optics to either deliver excitation to samples or collect emitted radiation and transport it to detection region
  • Perform optical analysis to demonstrate the optical detection concept compliance with specifications
  • Establish tolerances for optics that balance cost and performance to meet targets in instrument specifications and schedule achievements in product development plan
  • Work with mechanical engineer in design of optomechanical assemblies that meet the specification of the optical detection subsystem
  • Assemble, align, activate, and test prototype optical systems in laboratory environment
  • Develop optical alignment and other manufacturing procedures according to Product Development Guidelines
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master or PhD in Optics or Physics, with focus on spectrometry
  • Proven experience (10+ years of experience preferred) in an R&D development environment focused in development of OE (Optical Emission) spectrometers
  • Designing, developing, testing, and manufacturing new products or improving existing products
  • Experience in the use of gratings, filters, mirrors, CCD/CMOS, LED and other light sources
  • Hands-on experience with optical systems in lab and manufacturing environment essential.
  • Intimate knowledge of optical modeling software packages such as ZEMAX, plus non sequential ray tracing tools
  • Knowledge of mounting, bonding, and adjustment of optical components
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to respond quickly to changes in project requirements
  • Fluent in English, knowledge of French.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Expertise in developing and testing Optical Emission spectrometers, participating in all phases of a project, from design phase to support after launch on the market
  • Familiarity with MatLab or other mathematical software tools packages is very desirable
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to efficiently evaluate, prioritize and handle multiple and changing projects and priorities.
  • Experience in working with regulatory teams and knowledge of regulatory agency requirements.
