Staff Package Development Engineer based in Zuchwil

(Permanent)

Overview

This new role will be responsible for the development and continuous improvement of sterile barrier packaging systems for medical devices. Packaging will play a meaningful role in enabling easy identification, safe sterile transfer, and quick delivery of the device to the sterile field, as well as will enable sustainability benefits, supply chain efficiency, and improved patient outcomes!

The packaging system provides a sterile barrier seal, so robust design, feasibility, validation, and a reliable supply chain are crucial to ensure high quality. Model a customer centric approach with clear communication and prioritization. This role will represent package development in direct communication with partners and leadership across research & development and supply chain, while collaborating with a small but highly capable team of engineers across other sites and provide technical leadership across all functions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develops, independently leads, and implements sophisticated packaging projects across the entire Trauma and Spine product portfolio. Leads unique engineering and strategic assignments, provides mentorship to other packaging engineers, and can have team members under their leadership.
  • Provides technical expertise in the areas of design, Polymer development, testing, Injection molding, tool design and production scale-up of new packaging components and systems.
  • Leads problem solving in the resolution of packaging related issues in manufacturing, at suppliers, and in the field.
  • Provides inventions, new designs, processes or techniques which are significant to the solution of meaningful problems.
  • Continually evaluates new packaging solutions and alternatives to improve operating efficiency, generate market differentiators, and add sources of revenue.
  • Maintains up to date knowledge of the industry and regulatory trends, as well as all laws, policies, and standards related to packaging and ensures these are translated into working practices.
  • Exhibits the highest levels of integrity, ethics and compliance at all times.
  • Represents packaging in internal and external audits.
  • Serves as mentor for other team members and may lead junior engineers.

Required

Qualifications
  • 6 - 8 years proven experience in regulated packaging or medical industry
  • Proven track record of strategizing and leading unique and sophisticated projects
  • Proven experience working with internal partners, senior leadership, as well as with suppliers of direct materials and services
  • Detailed Polymer (characteristics) knowledge required
  • Proven Experience in plastic component processing scale-up to manufacturing
  • Defines strategy for fixtures and tool design and can express and implement ideas with tool designers and external tool makers
  • Profound knowledge of In Process Control and automation
  • Experience in plastic component design, development and qualification
  • Advanced knowledge of process DOE’s (mini-tab preferred), IQ/OQ/PQ,

Preferred
  • Project management, process excellence, and lean certifications
  • Intimate knowledge of ISO 13485, ISO 11607, ISTA and relevant ASTM’s
  • Advanced knowledge of CAD software (Creo, Solid Works, NX or similar)

Other
  • German and English required, French as a plus
  • Up to 10% domestic and international travel required
