Project aims:

Concurrence use of drugs that modulate (inhibit or induce) metabolizing enzymes may potentially alter the exposure of a victim drug where metabolism is a rate-determining step in e.g. hepatic clearance. This will cause unexpected adverse events or lack of efficacy, which limits access to new medications for a number of the patients. The scope of this internship project is to establish and qualify reasonable in vitro methodologies to evaluate time-dependent inhibition and induction for CYP enzymes at preclinical stage using human liver preparations and new cellular tools upon necessity, to support clinical pharmacology programs for compounds showing complex drug-drug interaction (DDI) properties. This research can also provide opportunities to learn about assay techniques (sample incubation and bioanalysis with system automation) and knowledge on how to evaluate DDI risks of small molecules, which has been generally deployed in our ADME chapter.

Skills:

You have basic knowledge and strong interest in enzyme inhibition/induction risk assessment and the experimental designs
  • You are familiar with common digital tools for experimental planning, and potentially gained hands-on experience with quantitative LC-MS
  • You are able to work with a proactive and strategic thinking style in close collaboration in a team of the subject matter experts

Education and Experience:

Degree (BSc/MSc) in biochemistry, drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics or equivalently relevant study area
