Position Summary

The College of Agriculture and Life Science is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University’s second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education and outreach. The questions we prove and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical and economic well-being.

This position in applied entomology emphasizes research on insect ecology and insect pest management in fruit crops. The goal of the Tree Fruit Entomology Program is to improve the productivity, profitability and sustainability of fruit crops in New York State. This goal is met by conducting fundamental research to better understand pest biology, ecology and behavior as well as applied research to evaluate pest management tactics. Taken together, these research results are used to develop practical, durable, economically feasible and environmentally sustainable insect pest management strategies. This program also has a strong commitment to extension; therefore, research results will be communicated frequently to all stakeholders in the fruit industry.

Perform field, greenhouse and lab research under the general supervision of the PI on tree fruit insect pest biology and management. Responsibilities include the following: 1) under supervisor direction, maintaining plants and insects for use in research; 2) assist in conducting pesticide efficacy trials in the laboratory field; 3) interest and commitment to learning to work with and eventually, developing working knowledge of large machinery such as tractors, sprayers 4) good communication within the Program and with collaborators; 5) data collection and compiling and 6) supervising/training temporary labor and organizing schedules alongside PI. 7) assisting PI with administrative tasks related to the lab such as ordering, inventory, and chemical records. Contribute to the organization of laboratory, greenhouse and field facilities used by the Program and assist with ensuring compliance with safety and health guidelines.

This is a full time (39 hours per week), twelve-month term appointment with possibility of renewal based on secured funding and successful performance.

Required Qualifications

Previous experience working with insect colonies and greenhouse plants is desired. Previous work experience in a laboratory setting is desired. Knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel, Google Docs and other similar software. Interest in learning how to work with large machinery and with pesticides is highly desirable. Ability to create an inclusive high quality and respectful work environment both in a team setting and independently to achieve lab, departmental and university goals. Must be personable, flexible, proactive, and possess excellent organizational and communication skills and take pride in work. Demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff and grower cooperators. Visual concentration, attention to detail and manual dexterity. Must have demonstrated ability to handle sensitive/confidential material in a professional manner. Ability to work on multiple projects at once and meet deadlines. Prior experience in collecting and compiling of data. Demonstrated effective listening skills, sound judgment, excellent reasoning and decision-making skills, meticulous record keeping and ability to work with diverse personalities. Ability to work in a range of environments (e.g. field). Continued training and expansion of skills through participation in job-related courses, seminars and workshops is expected. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Must possess and maintain valid driver license and meet the driving requirements of the position.

Preferred Qualifications

Terminal Bachelor’s degree in entomology and/or agriculturally related field or two to four years of relevant experience in entomology or plant science—through working directly with farm production, industry, and/or nursery experience . Knowledge and/or education in agricultural research methodology and formal training or knowledge of biology, plant science or agriculture. Experience growing plants under greenhouse or growth chamber conditions. Experience analyzed data using statistics. Familiarity with laboratory instrumentation and methodology.
