GIS Data Scientist | Startup Adventure

Client Description:

We are looking for one of the most interesting startups in earth observation. The company, based in switzerland and milan, is a consultancy and applied research company that combines earth observation, data science and machine learning to provide new insights into complex societal, environmental and economic problems.

We are seeking a talented and motivated Data Scientist with GIS experience to join our team. The person appointed for this post will assist the DS and CV group of the company in developing data-driven analyses to assist decision-making and turn prototyping ideas into actual data products. The selected profile will be working with an interdisciplinary team of experienced professionals having the chance to create algorithms that transform location-based and structured data into actionable insights for institutional partners and new data products for business customers.

• Salary: 35,000 to 70,000 € / year (gross), depending on experience and qualifications
• Tasks: Develop data analyses to transform multi-layered geospatial data into business-valued information and data products. Coordinate with the IT team to integrate your DS pipelines into production. Interface with the Computer Vision team to harmonize input data and streamline them to GIS analyses. Provide insight and support to the DS team in the RnD activities linked to European projects and/or consultancy activities for top-tier international institutions. Maintain a good understanding of Database contents and specifications, as well as the various tools and technologies used in the DB and Cloud infrastructure

Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate has experience in developing machine learning models (using the Python ML stack and/or PyTorch/TF) trained on large databases logging human activities to forecast their evolution or extract hidden patterns. We also require previous experience in the analysis of geospatial data (be it, for example, location-based data, satellite images or census shapefiles) and in the usage of GIS tools (at least QGIS or geopandas). The ability to present findings to institutional and business stakeholders is a plus that will be valued.

We welcome applications from all levels of seniority but we do require proficiency in using Jupyter Notebooks, pandas and geopandas/QGIS usage, NumPy, matplotlib/seaborn, and scikit-learn, as well as a knowledge of SVC tools. Basic SQL/PosGIS skills and/or experience in working with Spark/Apache Sedona will be considered a plus.
