About the team

Join our Special Risks team! We are looking for a highly motivated, technically strong Actuary to complement our team in Zurich, covering markets mainly in EMEA but also on other continents. We closely collaborate with our central Actuarial Services team. This for motor and liability business as well as for various niche products such as Extended Warranty, Kidnap & Ransom, Affinity and other non-standard covers.


  • Your job will entail evaluating and pricing facultative and treaty business

  • You will collaborate with client managers and underwriters in cross-functional teams. Together, we build on the partnerships with our clients and share our knowledge, with the objective to add value for the client and Swiss Re. This role offers you lots of space to develop own ideas and find creative solutions.

The position is based in Zurich. The Special Risks team as such is spread over various locations in Europe.


The position covers two main responsibilities:


A) Contributing to data analytic projects as data analyst

With the ambition of becoming a data driven company, the department of Facultative EMEA is using the technology to enable underwriting teams to use (Big) data in the daily business. As the data analyst you would bring technical skills to the teams with business expertise.


Your main tasks are:

  • Act as technology lead by partnering with various technology teams to build and drive sustainable analytics solutions.

  • Employ data visualization techniques to design business reports and dashboards in various platforms including but not limited to R-Shiny, Python, PowerBI, Tableau and Palantir.

  • Build and maintain data ontology in Palantir to drive the project mandate.

  • Build and maintain continuous improvement of existing analytic capabilities (in Palantir) and underlying data sources.

  • Employ data to enhance the decision-making about risk selection, loss costing/pricing and actively enable the execution of global team mandate.

  • Act as technical guru to guide the business team achieve technology transformation.


B) Reinsurance pricing of Sharing Economy Deals

Alongside of the contribution to various smaller business opportunities you will be involved in the pricing of accounts forming part of a portfolio of Sharing Economy business globally, in the area of, for example, ride sharing, delivery, vehicle leasing, accommodation sharing and autonomous vehicle testing.


As Actuary you will represent Swiss Re in the actuarial discussions between Swiss Re, the partnering insurer and occasionally the insured. You will price new sharing economy accounts, both primary and excess, as well as review and challenge the work done by the actuarial and underwriting teams of our partner.


Your main tasks are:

  • Price accounts in the area of new sharing economy business.

  • Review the actuarial analysis conducted by the actuarial team of our partner, challenge the analysis, make proposals for improvement.

  • Be part of the discussion and negotiation with our partner and insureds, especially to help them understand change in external environment (e.g. social inflation), year-on-year movement (e.g. loss development) and portfolio composition analysis and what they can do to support data analysis and improve risk management.

  • Keep the link to claims, reserving and solution and bring in expertise needed for the deal.


About you

  • You have a deep understanding of motor business and liability business in general

  • Proficiency in data analytical languages like R, Python, Spark Sql and Javascript.

  • You are fluent in applying US and European actuarial approaches and techniques including curve fitting as well as diverse development and blending methods. Knowledge of ISO is of help but not a must.

  • Ability to explain actuarial techniques and your actuarial analysis in simple words to underwriters and actuaries of other teams

  • You have vast knowledge and experience of wider actuarial methods and techniques and you are happy to share your knowledge with our clients.

  • Courage to take actuarial decisions and defend them even in the absence of data and with a strong actuarial team as counterpart.

  • Proficiency with data visualization techniques and dashboarding tools like MS Power BI, TABLEU or R-Shiny.

  • Hands on experience with data warehouse and data analytics tools. Knowledge with Palantir Foundry is an asset.

  • Whilst not in charge of the client relationship, you enjoy interacting and socializing with our clients and key partners

  • You have excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, any additional language is a plus

  • You are an outstanding teammate who can work independently, deal with different multi-disciplinary projects simultaneously, take ownership for making decisions and help others out where and when vital

  • You are forward-thinking, credible, enthusiastic and curious to learn
