The HES-SO Geneva is looking for its ethnomusicology branch at the Geneva Haute école de musique:

An Associate Professor in Ethnomusicology

Permanent appointment

Activity rate 50-70%

A School of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland (HES-SO), stemming from the

professional sections of the Geneva Conservatory of Music and the Jaques-Dalcroze Institute, the Geneva-

Neuchâtel Haute école de musique (HEM) covers a historical and stylistic field ranging from medieval music to

contemporary creation, including music from other cultures. Its circa 600 students, coming from all over the world,

benefit from the teaching of a hundred highly qualified artists and guest teachers, as well as a large local and

international network.

The school missions include bachelor’s and master’s degree courses, continuing education, research and

development and mandates.

Within HEM, ethnomusicology is taught in a joint master’s degree with the Universities of Geneva and Neuchâtel,

in elective modules, and in non-Western musical workshops on offered within its Center for Musical Cultures. In

addition, the HEM conducts various musical projects with a social dimension, both in Switzerland and abroad,

congruent with the field of applied ethnomusicology. In this context, it benefits from an extensive network of

governmental and non-governmental partners around the world.

Main mission

With an in-depth knowledge of the issues of contemporary ethnomusicology and of the strategic vision of HEM in

the field, the main mission of the incumbent will be to:

  • Ensure the strategic and operational management of the joint master’s degree in ethnomusicology HEM-

UniGe-UniNe within its Scientific council. Participate in the development, evaluation and monitoring of

the curriculum (content, objectives, methods, means).

  • Conduct research activities in the field of ethnomusicology/applied ethnomusicology, as principal

applicant to third-party funding.

  • Supervise master thesis in ethnomusicology and possibly co-supervise doctoral thesis with partner

universities.

  • Designs and evaluates the teaching of ethnomusicology and the practice of music from diverse cultural

backgrounds at the HEM, and coordinates the activities of the teaching staff in this field.

  • Ensures the management of the Center for Musical Cultures with the assistance of dedicated staff, and

supervises its artistic and educational activities.

  • Assume practical and theoretical teaching within the framework of the HEM study plans in consultation

with the head of studies and within the framework of the Master in ethnomusicology in consultation with

its Scientific Council.

  • Participate in the transversal dynamics of artistic and pedagogical projects in collaboration with the other
departments of the HEM.
  • Represent the HEM at national and international bodies in the field of ethnomusicology.

Profile / Skills

  • Master’s degree in ethnomusicology or equivalent qualification.
  • At least five years of experience in teaching and/or in the field of ethnomusicology or applied
ethnomusicology.
  • National and international influence in the field of ethnomusicology.
  • Practical experience in one or more ethnomusicological fields of application: educational projects with a

social dimension; conservation and enhancement of tangible and intangible heritage; instrumental

performance and pedagogy; music, migration policies and multiculturalism; musical practices in

situations of violence and conflict; cultural diplomacy through music projects.

  • Collegial leadership, listening and communication skills, ability to bring people together and foster

teamwork.

  • Sense of organization and priorities in the management of the Centre des cultures, the development of

curricula and research, as well as in the support of teachers and students.

  • Fluency in French (working language) and English.

A recruitment to the position of Assistant HES Professor with conditional pre-tenure (PAPTC) may be considered

if not all job requirements are met.

The salary conditions are in line with the salary scale of the State of Geneva (link below). Associate HES professors
