The World Council of Churches (WCC) is an ecumenical fellowship of churches founded in 1948. It brings together 350 member churches from all over the world, including Orthodox churches, Anglican, Baptist, Lutheran and Reformed denominations, to promote Christian unity in faith, witness and service for a just and peaceful world.

The 11th Assembly of the WCC will take place in Karlsruhe, Germany, from 31 August to 8 September 2022. It brings together more than 4000 participants, coming from all over the world. It is a unique opportunity for the churches to deepen their commitment to visible unity and common witness. This makes a WCC Assembly the most diverse Christian gathering of its size in the world.

The WCC is looking for an Assembly Finance Officer at 80% who will work with the Finance and Assembly teams to prepare and report on financial planning, budgeting and monitoring for the WCC 11th Assembly and for assigned programmes and other departments. The position will be based at the Ecumenical Centre, Grand-Saconnex, and will report to the Finance Manager, Planning & Budgeting

Specific responsibilities:

11th Assembly (predominantly)

  • Support the monitoring of the assembly budget, working closely with both the assembly co-ordinator and the finance manager
  • Prepare financial forecasts in relation to assembly
  • Review contracts in excess of CHF1,000 to ensure compliance with procurement policy (3 quotes) and government and other grants’ requirements, raise issues for clarification in the interests of WCC
  • Monitor assembly income and costs, including VAT, raise issues on significant deviations from approved budget
  • Monitor the implementation of specific grants’ conditions, and offer support to programme staff where required in order to ensure compliance;
  • Review and monitor internal controls over the assembly processes as required by WCC policies, and delivery of the internal controls’ documentation to the external auditor
  • Review staff time allocations and to the assembly to ensure compliance with government grant requirements
  • Prepare monthly financial reports and forecasts of assembly income and expenses with analytical comments in relation to budget
  • Support development of policies and procedures concerning finance matters in relation to assembly as may be required
  • Pro-actively raise issues and concerns about financial issues in relation to assembly, and participate in resolution
  • Prepare final analytical financial reports for the assembly to external parties and as prescribed by government and other grant agreements
  • Prepare and support of the assembly project financial, procurement and other documentation for the external auditors
  • Participate in financial service delivery on site at the assembly as part of the team
  • Collaborate with assembly office staff in the implementation and control of invoicing procedures for assembly fees
  • Approve financial transactions in relation to assembly in accordance with finance department procedures, and complete relevant assembly accounting tasks

WCC Programmes and departments, other projects (remaining)

  • Documentation and review of finance work flows within the department, with other WCC staff and external to WCC. Propose, develop and implement improved processes.
  • Monitoring and reporting of programme and other department finances as assigned by the manager
  • Transaction approvals in relation to assigned responsibilities in accordance with finance department procedures
  • Month-end and year-end financial closing and reporting processes as assigned by the manager
  • Project and ad-hoc tasks in relation to finance department responsibilities as assigned by the manager

Qualifications and Special Requirements:

  • Formal training maintain and work experience in financial accounting
  • Ability to financial records accurately in line with WCC accounting policies, and to present documented financial work for audit
  • Thorough understanding of financial controls and accounting policies
  • Ability to work with computerized accounting systems (Microsoft Dynamics Navision or Business Central is desirable), advanced knowledge of Excel required; experience in Jet Reports and Jet Analytics would be a valuable asset
  • Fluency in written and spoken English. Fluency in German would be a significant advantage
  • Ability to work in a team and to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization
