The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) is the largest global membership organisation dedicated to taking action against cancer. Founded in 1933 and based in Geneva, UICC has over 1,100 member organisations in 172 countries and territories. UICC’s mission is to both unite and support the cancer community in its efforts to reduce the global cancer burden, promote greater equity and ensure that cancer control remains a priority on the global health and development agenda.

UICC has consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and has official relations with the World Health Organization (WHO) and partnerships with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). UICC is a founding member of the NCD Alliance, the McCabe Centre for Law & Cancer, the International Cancer Control Partnership (ICCP) and established the City Cancer Challenge Foundation in January 2019 and the Access to Oncology Medicines (ATOM) Coalition in May 2022.

Summary of the position

The ATOM Coalition Communication Specialist will work under the guidance of UICC’s Head of Communications and Marketing in coordination with the ATOM Coalition Management Team. He/she will be responsible for the timely delivery of key communication products and activities as noted in the ATOM Coalition communication strategy. The Communication Specialist will coordinate closely with UICC’s Head of Communications and Marketing to ensure that ATOM Coalition communication activities are properly embedded within UICC’s global Communications Framework and key information is disseminated among UICC members and partners.

Main responsibilities

  • Ensure timely implementation of all key communication activities and outputs, including:
    • Producing the ATOM Coalition Monthly Update – collate input from ATOM task team members on key highlights and lead on drafting and disseminating to the ATOM Coalition distribution list.
    • Maintaining and updating the ATOM Coalition microsite (hosted on uicc.org) – update partner logos, uploading relevant content, drafting articles and blog posts.
    • Developing and managing content for ATOM-branded social media accounts and coordinating with UICC Communications and Marketing to leverage additional opportunities to upload content on UICC social media platforms.
    • Maintaining and updating the existing resource library of access-related research articles, materials, tools, and best practices.
    • Coordinating with UICC’s Executive Assistant to the CEO to maintain and update relevant distribution lists.
  • Provide communications support for global and regional events and activities, including:
    • ATOM Coalition-focused events and key global international health and development meetings and conferences, such as UNGA, ASCO, AORTIC, WHA, etc.
    • Provide critical communications support highlighting the ATOM Coalition within UICC’s calendar of events, including World Cancer Day, World Cancer Congress, Regional Dialogues, etc.
  • Provide communications support to the ATOM management team and technical teams as needed, review and edit key foundational documents including:
    • ATOM Coalition PPT presentations
    • Fact sheets
    • Funding proposals
    • Speaking lines
    • Op eds and other articles for external dissemination.
  • Liaise with communications teams from ATOM Coalition partner organisations to ensure consistent and clear messaging on ATOM’s role is embedded within press releases or announcements on activities related to access to oncology medicines in LLMICs.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to key stakeholders in ATOM Coalition target countries on communication guidelines to support the launch of country-level support activities.
  • Provide support to UICC’s Head of Communications and Marketing in convening the ATOM Communications task force as needed, including updating and disseminating brand guidelines.

Skills and competencies

  • Degree in an area relevant to the job description e.g. communications, marketing, public health, etc.

  • 3-5 years’ work experience in communications with an NGO or a membership organisation

  • Good understanding of global public health issues

  • English mother tongue, French and/or Spanish a plus

  • Excellent writing and communication skills

  • Experience in web editing and content creation
