Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Are you passionate about cutting edge technology, extreme cleanliness, and rigorous process control?
As a technical engineer in the Superconducting RF Section, you will be part of a team working on superconducting RF with the aim of assembling, maintaining, and testing high-performance superconducting radio-frequency components and overseeing infrastructure management for both existing accelerators at CERN and upcoming projects.

You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), which is responsible for the beam-related technical systems of the CERN accelerators. The SY teams design, build and operate equipment systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward-looking R&D programmes. You will be working within the RF Group, in the SRF Section.

Functions

You will:

  • Take responsibility for the exploitation and the future upgrades of the clean rooms, ultrapure water plants, high pressure water rinsing rigs, and other related SRF facilities;
  • Be responsible for the clean assembly of SRF components from cavities up-to cryomodules in ISO4 environment;
  • Develop and improve cleanroom assembly techniques and processes in accordance with the challenges proposed by the SRF cavity designs being developed by the CERN community;
  • Take responsibility for quality control procedures and documenting results;
  • Take a leading role in the development of the cleanroom assembly sequences for several cryomodule designs and for the definition, design, and implementation of future SRF facilities;
  • Participate in the conceptual design of specific RF components and follow-up of production;
  • Participate in the chemical treatment and cleaning of parts.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical or chemical engineering or a related field.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience with the design and exploitation of SRF infrastructures such as clean rooms, ultrapure water, high pressure water rinsing, pure gas distribution systems;
  • Proven experience with clean room assembly of SRF objects or mechanical parts in ISO4 conditions;
  • Experience with contract management, installation, operation and maintenance of industrial data-acquisition, monitoring and control systems would be an asset.

Technical competencies:

  • Knowledge and application of clean-room techniques;
  • Quality management;
  • Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment;
  • Operation and maintenance of mechanical components and systems, ideally with RF components and systems.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Demonstrating accountability: working conscientiously and reliably; delivering on promises.
  • Achieving results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
  • Working in teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.
  • Learning and sharing knowledge: sharing knowledge and expertise freely and willingly with others; coaching others to ensure knowledge transfer.
  • Demonstrating flexibility: actively participating in the implementation of new processes and technologies.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French: ability to draw up technical texts in one of the two languages, as well as ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts.
